When I was on vacation last month in Florida, my uncle was showing me his new Pioneer head unit in his truck and it was super nice... graphic display and all that crap. Best thing about it? It was $30 brand new in box from a pawn shop. He then went and showed me tons of cool stuff like MP3 players, a couple digital camera...some stuff new, some used...and he got great deals on all of it.

I had never even been in a pawn shop before so when I get back from vacation I decided that I ould visit a couple in my area.

Some good deals, some crappy deals. There was this giant plastic bin full of Dewalt (Black/Yellow) power tools and they wanted $300 for everything... wasn't sure if it was a good deal or not. There was a pair of 18" wheels with newer looking tires for $400 (the wheels were painted, but looked nice, I might go back and buy them if they fit my I30, hehe). Uhhmm... there were like 100 used DVD players in there all priced around $50 and tons and tons of guitars and guitar equipment. This was a really small pawn shop too, I'm going to check out a place that said they have about 10 sets of wheels / tires.

Any of you go into any of these places and score? And not with the lady behind the counter.

We got our wedding rings at one of those pawn type shops that buy/sell jewelry and precious metals. I hate the ring and was not happy about the whole thing. He says "here, pick something out from this tray"...they all sucked. So, no, never got a great deal from a pawn shop, just a ring that is sitting in the bottom of some box somewhere in my closet.

Meh, didn't have much choice. Either chose from the sh!tty stuff in the tray or don't have a ring. Cheap bastard. I'm not someone who wears jewelry or gets excited over material possessions, but it hurt my feelings anyway that he was so cavalier about the whole thing "here, pick something out for yourself while I find a good band for me."

Edit: I guess I'm feeling kind of bitter and sorry for myself right now because we always said we'd get a nice set custom made for us at our ten year anniversary, and here it is, ten years and I'm not wearing a proper wedding ring, I'm wearing a twenty dollar sterling silver ring I bought myself.

I've found that if you get to be friends with the pawn shop owners or the guys who
work there they will cut you some deals but usually if you have to pay what the tag
says that it will be nearly as much as a new item.

Whether an item is stolen or not is a good question. Here locally pawn shops have to
report what they take in every day to the local police so they can see if stolen stuff
shows up but I know of a digital camera that was stolen out of my office that a pawn
broker ended up with but he never "showed it on the books" but the pawnbroker paid
cash for it and carried it home to use himself. At the time it was a $600 Sony camera
and he said he bought it for $150 from a "guy who came in". I heard about his score
through the grapevine and I told him about the one taken from us in a break in and
he checked the serial number and it was the same camera. He told the police who he
bought it from and they already had him in jail for something else and the boss
of my company went to the pawnbroker and gave him his $150 back for the camera
and we went back to using it :)

So my rule of thumb is that usually what you see at pawn shops is the trash and the good
stuff has already been taken home by the owners or his buddies and since most of them
get around 25% interest a month here locally they don't care if they sell what they have
on display but rather make their living off what you don't see that they are holding in
pawn in the "back room".

it's always funny to walk into a pawn shop and see five identical VCRs still sealed in the factory boxes.

A friend of mine owns 2 pawn shops. I've spent tons of money on Games, DVDs, CDs, Gaming systems, golf clubs, fishing rods/reels (for my dad), tools, TVs, stereo equipment, etc. If something doesn't work, I just give it back to him and pick out something else.

When I walk in the store, he'll let me go in the back and pick out items that are on the 30 day wait list. I just slap my name on the stuff and he'll save it for me.

I don't even want to think of the amount of money I've thrown to pawn shops.

Strangely enough, when I was in vacation in Florida, like 6 years ago, I found a badass Dremel and like 1000 bits, like new, in the box for $25. (at a pawn shop)

DONT GET BURNED, GO TO EBAY AND GET A MUCH BETTER DEAL IF SOMETHING ISN'T POPULAR OR ISN'T IN DEMAN, ISN'T WORTH MUCH.

What is pawn???

It means to get owned by shop literally robbing you of your hard earned income, heh. Major rip off? Hell YES!!!

Moral of the story: unless you really can't afford anything else, your spouse will never forget if you buy her a crappy ring at a pawn shop, particularly if you had bought your first wife expensive engagement/wedding rings.

Yeah, it sounds to me like those items were stolen. I know here in Omaha, you have to leave a thumbprint when you sell anything to a pawnshop. Not really any great deals around here, unless they're running a sale, or you go to the right shop. Most of them will at least haggle, since they're charging way more than they paid for an item in the first place.
Case in point, I had to sell one of my guitars years back. I got $150 for it. I paid $300 brand new. The price tag on it a few months later was $400 (and this wasn't a special or collectible guitar).

Just guns. Can't say I've ever bought anything else. Well DVDs actually. Shop here has them for $4 each. Big, nice titles too, not just $5 Wal-mart crap.

They're not bad for picking up things like golf clubs or guns. Remember just because the tag says X dollars doesn't mean you can't offer the guy something less, you can pick some decent stuff up for cheap - so long as your morality doesn't get to you (read stolen items).
