In the middle of the night while you're sleeping? It must have been 2-3 in the morning, and i woke up with a huge pain in my left calf. I thought i was going to pass out from the pain, and as i touched it, i felt a HUGE knot in my calf... so there i was in the middle of the night, curled up in a fetus position, with one hand on the knot, and the other pinching my upper lip (supposedly relieves the pain). It went on for so long i was wondering if the muscles were going to rip, but eventually it went away and i instantly fell back to sleep. This morning i woke up, and the pain is still there... but more like a charlie horse bruise pain (though no bruising).

I haven't had a cramp like that in a long time... coincidentally i did one of the most strenuous leg workout yesterday. Wonder how that triggered it (if it did).

I've had maybe 3 or 4 of those during sleep since I started high school (I'm 21 now, graduating from college). They were the most painful thing ever, I couldn't even cry out for help. I've only gotten one like that while awake, and it was right in the middle of the 100 Fly (my event) at Nationals. That sucked even worse... I barely made it out of the pool, I couldn't even move the leg.

No, it doesn't work - I get cramps about every other nite and milk and bananas are a HUGE part of my diet. I usually eat two to three bananas a day, and I am always drinking milk, yet I still have the cramps.

Hmm i probably have a higher potassium and calcium intake than the average person due to my bananas and protein shakes. I don't know, like i said, this hasn't happened in a long while. If it happens again, i'll probably try upping it some more.

It's called a Charley Horse. Next time stand up and stand on your tip toes. Goes away pretty quick that way.

I get those in my feet. Gotta point my toes for 5 minutes to get them to go away. Not sure why they happen though...

Yeah, i use to get them on my feet as well... you can see your toes straighten out when that happens.

Oh give me a break pansy boy! On your feet and reach for the stars! Do it! Do It! DO IT! :p
You only make it worse by just laying there waiting for it to go away. Sometimes I do that intentionally though. Makes you more tolerant to pain. ;)

and standing on your tip toes will contract the calf muscle which is even worse. iirc, you're supposed to STRETCH the muscle by pointing your toes upward and try to massage it out.

Hmm so you're suppose to stretch it? Are you guys serious? I was trying to massage the knot out... not too sure how well that worked.

happened to me a few times after longs hrs. of bball ... next time this happens, slowly extend your leg and try to turn your toes yourself ... you need to stretch our the muscle versus curling up ...

I know - I was reading everyones "point your toes" posts and thinking, "wth is wrong with you people, you're going to make it 10x worse!!!!" The quickest way to get it out it to stand up, plant your feet flat on the floor, and lean foreward are far as you can.

Bleh I wasn't paying attention when I wrote my message. I meant to say pull your toes up (streches calf).

I get those on occasion.

About three years ago, I got one and had to use the restroom. I really had to go, so I figured I would hobble over there and see what I could do. Low and behold, as soon as I was standing, it started going away.

Ever since then, when I get one I try and stand up as quick as possible. Walk a couple steps and it usually just dies down really quick. It may hurt like heck to stand, but a few seconds later you'll be feeling much better.
