I work for a company with roughly 100 employees. Our company billed $25 million last year, it's privately owned.

I was promoted in February to the Sales department. Between February and May, last month, I spent a lot of time coordinating trade shows, developing marketing materials (anything from catchy post cards to promotional item design, etc), designing powerpoint presentations for the President... coordinating his Public Relations events (donations, golf outings, etc).

I designed a program to evaluate some of our vendors and it has really taken off. Now, they've made me a salesman as well. Do mostly phone sales along with all of the duties I mentioned above, but they are interested in having me travel soon.

I graduate from NKU next May, and I am really loving all of this experience and resume building they are providing me with, but I'm only making $13/hr. I've talked to some family members who are making 5 to 6 times more than me who do less work. They just tell me it's because of my age.

Anyone else work in sales/marketing/PR and have any idea what my type of work typically pays?

EDIT: Typos

Sales usually give commission bonuses. Are you not getting any commission bonuses?

I say flip them the bird, take a dump in a paper bag, light it and leave on the desk of the President's desk.

No, just hourly. We sell a service (we're the AAA company for tractor trailer drivers) so getting a commitment to buy is usually as easy as having the fleet or safety director say "yes, we'll use you when we breakdown" or mailing in a credit app. The bulk of our business is intermodal maintenance for companies like Union Pacific, CSX, etc. We have another sales team that handles that... a couple of older more experienced guys, and I believe they are on salary.

Better yet, interview with some other companies and see what kind of offers you get. Take those offers back to your management and let them know what you could be making elsewhere and that you'll have to leave if they don't at least match it.

Everyday I feel like I don't get paid enough. Even after getting a raise 3 weeks ago and getting another in July, I know I still don't make enough. Of course, within the next few months I'll be changing jobs anyways.

Not that easy to measure. Our national breakdown service is young and is not generating much money at all at this point, but I have no idea how much money I've generated from coordinating trade show events, sending out marketing materials, designing stuff, etc.

I've got some examples of my work at my website (jasonrmanuel.com).

WAAAAH
stop whining.

I have been at the same place for over 25 years, and last year I did not make $40,000
including overtime.

Sounds like it's time to find another job.

Caveman, again, I'm not whining. Simply reflecting on the fact that I personally know older people in my family making 6 figures or near that who admit that they don't have a workload as heavy or stressful as mine.

In my experiences the most stressful/heavy workload comes to those in production. Man does it suck, but there is good money in it.

You have no degree, you're getting valuable experience, your pay sounds alright to me. Real world experience is immensely important in getting a job, if your company won't pay you much more when you graduate, you'll have a much easier time getting a job somewhere else thanks to them.

WTF? By your logic he should just be happy that he makes over $10 per hour??? You apparently have set the bar really high for yourself in life.

I see by the ignorance displayed in your above post that your moniker is an apt fitting one. Cavemanmoron indeed.

I'm 18 and I make $18 an hour. Who wants to touch me?

At the age of 13 I was making over $20. :p Of course I only worked Saturdays and Sundays for about 12 hours per day.

like, every day. I think about quitting on a pretty regular basis, but if I quit my job, I'd also want to move to a different region, and that kinda terrifies me. heh.

No, i think you probably are undervalued. Most 3rd or 4th year college students get internships around $15-$20, and a leg in at a company. I would talk to your boss and explain that you are not being equally compensated for the work you are doing for the company. Because you are not out of college (no degree) they have little reason to offer you better pay for fear of you finding a better job. Besides this, you could negotiate now for a large rasie after you graduate.

Be glad that you have a job. People in India and China will work for less than $13/hr.

Look around in the company. Get a handle on what others make, and how long they have been there. If it appears there is a fair amount of dissatisfaction and turnover, you have your answer.

Yeah, but where's the fun in that?

Actually, I find it quite fun to find out what your actual worth in the market compared to what you are currently making.
