Ever been laid off then asked to work 2 more weeks?

So,
I just got laid off of my job last week. The company stated that they were giving me my "2 weeks notice". I was assuming that they meant I would get 2 more weeks of pay as severance for being laid off. This happened last Wednesday.

Obviously, I did not "sign in" to work on Thursday or Friday of last week. (I work from home) I get a letter from them today that says they will not pay me my 2 more weeks of pay because I was not working. I am severely confused by how all this went down and I am pretty pissed off about the whole situation.

Can a company legally do this? They retracted their previous statements and their lack of communication on the entire process was completely lacking.

It seems that the problem is that you assumed that the 2 weeks pay was severance. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it was.

Two weeks notice means you still work those two weeks and are paid for it. Not that you just don't show up. Now you're terminated with cause which means no unemployment for you.

i think they gave you two weeks notice that you were being laid off, just like most people give two weeks notice before quitting

you still have to work those two weeks...

LOL - I hope you're like 18 years old and this is just a leaning experience for you.

Not sure I've ever heard of two weeks notice being considered severance.

I always think it's funny when people justify not giving two weeks notice because they don't believe their employer would do the same. Most laid off employees get more than 2 weeks notice. FIRED employees do not get notice, and don't deserve notice.

Im 25 and this was my 2nd job out of college. The company basically used me for 3 months to get an online marketing initiative running then they kicked me to the curb.

They never said anything about me continuing work.

Looks like i am about to get owned. I guess you live and you learn.

This is not true. Many larger corporations that actually provide severance packages, or just most good jobs - will let you know of being laid off the day of. Which they do for many reasons, like to prevent the employees from using all their vacation time in the final 2 weeks leading up to the day of. Or just not doing any work while you're there since you would have already been given the severance package

Yea sorry man, but this is very common terminology. As you said, just learn from it and move on.

Also a lesson to be learn get stuff down in writing when leaving or even being told of being laid off in advance. I remember about 13-14 years, this was when I was still a freshman in college. I gave my two weeks notice. Showed up and even scheduled an exit interview. Spoke to my manager and all and he was ok. X date was to be my last and interview afterwards since we had conflict of time. Bastard manager kept rescheduling me for exit interview.

Low and behold I get a letter saying I've been terminated for not showing up to work. Had to waste time with HR because I didn't want to be essentially "fired." good thing I kept emails of him being ok with the dates and rescheduling. the manager is a dickhead. when we refereed to policy regarding what was acceptable uniform, he'd work is hardest to get it change to his liking.

No, but I was laid off, and was hired back on at same pay through a temp agency at full pay and still got my severance package. I was basically getting double pay to do the same job while I was out looking for another, permanent job, which i got and the pay was almost the same an the the combined severance/wages on that job.

I would have assumed I had to work. If you're getting 2 weeks notice that you're losing your job, that means you lose your job in 2 weeks. During that 2 weeks you still have that job.
