I ask because I just got my latest CC statement indicating that my CC company has been generously providing funds in blocks of $75 and $100 to someone in the Los Angeles area.

Background: I travel from the east coast to LA on a fairly regular basis for business. I usually fly through Ontario. Lately, the rental car companies have been requiring that you re-fill their cars close to their facility upon return. In this case I refilled at a station close to the airport and then flew home. A month later and I have hundreds of $$$ worth of fraudulent transactions on my statement. I called the CC company and was told that I HAD to have swiped my card for the transactions to go through. After asking to talk to a CSR who wasn't on drugs I was told not to worry, just fill out an e-form they were going to send and it would be taken care of.

Was hoping that others could share their past experiences with this issue. While I feel a little "violated", I was hoping that they would revoke my card ... that way I wouldn't have to travel anymore.

No such luck ...

Never credit, but my debit / ATM card was copied once. They took out $400 cash a day for 2 or 3 days in a row until I noticed. I just called the bank, signed a form, and in 2 days I had my money back.

Credit cards are usually pretty good about it. Just sign the form and you're good to go.

I've had it a couple times. Once a person used my number at a walgreens for about $70 around 2000 miles from my house. I called, they closed that card and got a new card fedexed overnight.

Another time someone in Brazil tried to buy $2500 worth of stuff from their home depot equivilent. CC company called me with that one. Again, card colsed and a new card fedexed overnight.

I had my CC fraudulently used requiring me to replace the card 3 times in the span of approximately 18 months a few years ago. At no time did I ever lose my card, nor was it ever out of my possession. The first two times were likely due to admitted hacking of some third party data storage used by my CC company. I'm not sure where the third came from, I'm pretty anal about where I use my CC simply so the information isn't out there.

That said, I never had a problem with the charges. I just contacted my CC company, they reversed the charges and issued a new card. Incredibly frustrating, though.

found out it was gone by looking at my online activity the following day and saw that some fucker went to dinner and a movie with my card!

I used to get a lot of problems when traveling to Canada. I even had to visit the R.C.M.P. over double billing. The people doing it thought I would never show up in person. The problem was always in the St Catherines -Hamilton area. I had the problem with both Amex and Visa. Visa inaction force the Police visit.

Had my debit card stolen once, but they didn't have my PIN. They tried to charge somewhere around $1,500 over the course of a day or two. Luckily my bank was decently smart and canceled the card, and I didn't get stuck with any charges.

Yes. They started charging $100 a pop at gas stations and lots at fast food joints a couple states away. I spotted it quickly and called to notify the CC of the fraud. Proof was easy for me:

1) I used the same CC two states away at the same time.
2) My car is a Civic and I couldn't use $100 in gas if I wanted to.
3) I had never used a CC at a fast food restaurant in 15 years of having that CC.

The CC company rejected those charges and gave me a new card.

Someone used my credit card number to charge over $2000 at Best Buy via phone. Credit card company didn't flag it as unusual even though I've never charged anything from BB by phone and have never been in the state this was charged from. CC company did flag a $30 Target purchase in VA as unusual even though I visit that same town a couple of times a year and have for several years. Go figure. Fortunately there was no problem with having the BB charge removed. They closed the CC account immediately and issued a new card. Never heard any more from them about it.

Once someone tried to Western Union $400 using my CC # but they failed to pick up the cash and so the charge was reversed.

The only time I have been a victim of credit card fraud is when my ex-wife was getting cards in my name. We were married at the time,.

yes, on both my Visa and American Express. both times they were flagged immediately and the charges were reversed within two hours of notifying me. they issued me new cards right away and that was that.

someone copied my cards and used them at Macys in Staten Island and at some shoe store in the UK. like $200-400 charges each time.

3 times last year my card was detected by my credit union to have attempted fraudulent charges but they caught it each time and did not allow it to go through.

No clue how they knew but glad they did catch it.

Worst part was waiting on the replacement cards each time. One of the downsides of my credit union vs a big bank is they do not send overnight by default for card replacements.

I don't think I ever had been, even with my ATM/debit <crossing fingers>. But then again, I am very careful/almost paranoid with my cards.

Someone bought 2 first class tickets to Australia on my CC once... something like $5600!

First class to Oz for less than $3K/each? When was it? Cheapest seat to Asia/Oz/Pacific Rim area is about $1500/each. I don't know how it was possible to get first class or even business class seat for that cheap.

Maybe I need to contact that frauster? :p

Yes several times.

The most recent was someone was charging my Credit Card for shows in Las Vegas. I get e-mailed for any charges about $50 on my CC so Picked up on it real quick and called the CC company. They immediatelly canceled my card and I had a new one a couple of days later. This is why it is important to have at least 2 credit cards in my opinion.

Yes, once. I had to give my drivers license and credit card to test-ride a bike in San Francisco, and inadvertently left them behind. Came back a week later and someone had used my card for a few fairly small charges, totaling about $300, in Las Vegas. It was annoying, but no big deal to get it straightened out.

About half a year ago someone charged $100 online with my credit card but that got quickly resolved by my bank. I remember a couple years back someone charged about $800 on my dads debit card to a place in the UK. It's crazy out there lol.

I wonder if the CC companies/banks try to catch these thieves or they just take the hit as a cost of doing business? These unauthorized charges are so common that it seems like the petty charges aren't being pursued at all since all I see are major credit card thieves being caught once in a while(the ones that sell cc info).

The CC companies make so much free money (charging money for loaning money) I'm sure they can soak the cost.

Really making spending money so easy helped boost spending but it is also their own pitfall. If they had different security measures to use their products, they wouldn't have this issue.

Cost of doing business if you ask me. Also I assume some process is followed to confirm the business asked for ID and etc. If the cost is too low they probably let it go.

Never. Someone tried to several months ago, but I got a call from my credit union the moment it happened. The charge was blocked, and I was sent a new cc number days later.

Some student bought textbooks with my CC info from the local bookstore. The charge was like $1200. The credit union was right across the street and I had my Financial Aid money back within 2 weeks.

Yes, just happened over the weekend. Went to buy a map update for my old Garmin. Card was denied. Looked online at my CC account. One fraudulent charge for $798 to Statravel had been approved, one fraudulent $53 charge to Paymentwall had been denied. My card was already frozen by the bank. Waiting for the new card now.

I haven't used the card online in a while, so it must have been compromised at a local merchant, probably through their card processor.

Cancelled my Bell internet, returned the modem, etc, had paperwork saying it was cancelled and all square.

They continued to bill my CC for three months despite phone calls and the whole 9 yards. Neither they nor VISA reimbursed me for their fraud.
