ever attempted to keep your landline number after moving?

i've heard there's been lies etc. with these phone companies... they are holding and reselling blocks of 'prime' areacode numbers... and tell you they are not avail, that there's a waiting list, or a monthly fee if you are to hold your own number etc...

 
I did it and had no trouble at all.

A law started in effect in May that the phone companies in the largest 100 cities are required to let you keep your landline number if you move within that city.

Most places have already tacked on a ~$.50 a month fee to everyone to cover the expenses (whether you plan to move or not). That was added to my bill like 2 years ago - well before I ever considered moving. Then some places charge a one time fee for the phone number transfer.

If you don't live in one of the largest 100 cities, I don't know the extent of the law.
 
I moved from a condo to a house in the same city in Michigan and was able to keep my landline number. About 3 months passed in-between moves also (stayed with parents in the meantime).
