Ever Accepted a Counter-Offer from an Employer?

Heh. I let my current employer know I was leaving for a new job, as my boss asked me to let him know if I got any offers so he could try to retain me. I told him my new job's salary and he wished me luck in my new position. It's too bad, I like where I am and what I do, but I guess some companies just have to tighten their belts more than others. And if they only offered to match I probably wouldn't have accepted anyway, my new job will be awesome.
 
I've been offered counter-offers before, but have never accepted them. I care about how much I enjoy my job far more than how much my salary is.
 
I was at a telemarketing job paying the bills in College. Selling Feature Films for Families. Anyway...I told my boss I was quitting because my class schedule and job schedule didn't mesh, and HR wouldn't let me take on any "special" schedules to accommodate my class schedule.

He countered with: "What's more important to you? Your career or schooling?"

I countered: "Selling family friendly videos over the phone isn't my career."

Boss stares at me confused...

Never take a counteroffer. Studies show that most employers terminate the employment of people who take counteroffers within the first 6 months. The main reason? They say that the employees loyalty is not there anymore. The employer will just offer you more money to keep you in the position you are in and start looking for replacements "behind the scenes".

I would never accept one.
 
Yep, very true. Companies expect loyalty from employees but yet they don't give (most of them don't) the same loyalty. A few companies I've been at would get rid of an employee that's been there 5 years just to hire on someone for a few dollars less. It sucked because most people there were all new and had no idea any of the company policies, things like that. I stayed there almost 2 years before taking on a better job.
 
I did something of the sort... My story is probably a little different than these here but probably more interesting too...

I moved to a different state to take this job as it was my first salary job. After 6-8 months (my plans were to come back after a year) I asked to move back home since I could do my job remote.

Well my job told me no and said wait a year which I didn't want to do.

Found another job that offered me an amazing salary (50% increase) doing exactly what I went to school for - But it still wasn't at home.

I went to my manager and told her what was up and that I would take the job if I couldn't move.

She offered to pay for my move home with 0 raise. I still took the offer because I really wanted to move back home.

Turns out they gave me a raise after I agreed to stay but it was only in the ballpark of 15-16% but now I don't have to drive to work and I live wherever I want.
 
I received an offer for 20K more than I was making at a previous company. When I went to resign, they attempted to counter for 2K more than other offer. I told them no, they asked me what it would take for me to stay. I told them 10K more than other offer, which would be a 30K pay raise over what I was currently making. They accepted, and I stuck around for another year until I found something better.

As I and others have said, it's amusing and hypocritical that companies expect loyalty out of people that they will fire or lay off at the drop of a hat if it will save them a few bucks.

Let's just be honest with each other -- we work to make money. I don't get up to an alarm, send my kids to daycare, and sit in a cubicle for 8 hours a day because I want to nor does almost anyone else. We do it because we need to feed our family, keep a roof over our heads, etc.

Just like my employer, if something comes along that will make me more money I'm going to seriously consider taking it.

"It's just business," right?
 
Nope,

Didn't want to be looked at as the guy who bullied the boss into a raise. Besides the last counter offer I recieved couldn't hold a candle to the salary I'm getting paid now.
