Hi guys....
Well I'm gonna go through a little story and maybe you guys can give me some advice...
Right now I work as a systems administrator for a good company in NYC. The position has room to grow, I make a good salary, and I am good at what I do. Most times, I enjoy it too. However, in the long term, I don't see myself in computers at all.
I have been writing a novel (up to 30 pages now, though I've destroyed more pages than I've written because I get frustrated at what I wrote). Hopefully by the end of the year I'll have the ability to finish it -- I just have to keep myself motivated. So first question, if anybody has any ideas on how to keep yourself motivated, full of ideas etc for writing, I'd appreciate it. I'm convinced it will be a good book -- I read a lot (usually a book a week or two) and I'm trying to see what authors do right and wrong and not make the same mistakes, and also take a pointer from here and there.
Now if my book becomes a best seller, I will definately have an 'out' from the IT world. And I'd like that -- to be a writer, making a living like that... but I don't see it as highly likely which brings me to the second question... grad school?
As I said, I want to get out of IT altogether... and rather get into something that's more rewarding 'inside' (as corny as it seems). I was thinking of going to graduate school for international diplomacy and hope to get a job at the UN or something... I'm not entirely sure. I obviously want to be able to provide for a family with a different career, something in the same realm of the money I would make in IT. I hate finance, I don't want to do an MBA... It occurred to me to go back for medicine as I think I'd really enjoy being a doctor, helping people... but I don't think I have the ability to as 'studious' as it would require me to be -- and to boot, it would cost a lot to do over the school loans I have already.
So any advice is appreciated... I know I'll be at this company for the next three or four years... I just want to start getting things in motion to make a career change later down the road. And if I can get around to writing the book... maybe I won't have to
Thanks!
