Event ID 51

Well I was reinstalling XP, and during the install the power went out, so I'm not sure if this is the cause, or not but I think it messed up the drive.

Now I'm seeing a Event ID 51, saying:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.

Looks like the drive might be bad?

THANKS

Well, if the power went out during the install, then it's possible some disk structure wasn't completely written. I wouldn't assume the drive itself is bad, but since it is a new install I suggest reformatting the disk.

I did reinstall XP, samething. I have a WD Raptor and I grabbed the Lifeguard tools and ran the Quick test and Extended test and there where no errors, so the only thing to do is the 1s & 0s for a low level format.

With those first two tests showing nothing I get the feeling the motherboard got zapped during the power outage, but I have the darn thing on a nice APC surge protector.

I'm thinking I'll swap out the SATA cables, reflash the BIOS and then do a low level format and if I still have the problem and the low level format doesn't show errors I guess the board crapped on me then.

I also have Micro-scope:

http://www.micro2000.com/microscope_suite/index.php

I'll run some tests with that too.

P.S. You think then possibly all it needs is a lowlevel format?

Ok I didn't do a LL format just yet, someone said this:

Does your drive support NCQ? I read an article where disabling it helped solve a event ID 51 problem.

Microsofts website has some articles on it too.

I noticed I had it enabled too, but now I shut it off, MAN I sure hope that is all it was.

Well 3 hours later no error message, looks like getting the NCQ turned off did it, I hope, sheesh was I nervous, LOL.

ALOHA

I'm getting this event 51 warning in the event viewer listed at the time my machine would have been booting.

Quick question: how do I disable NCQ? I'd like to try that first.

Also, what performance impact will disabling NCQ have?

Unless you are running servers, it would have no impact.
