Even the "mighty" Porsche Cayenne can't be saved on snow/ice with an idiot driver behind the wheel

That doesn't even count as snow. :p

My 924S does better than that and in deeper snow too. Bad Porsche driver! No cookie!

I was waiting for you to post that from the Vortex. :)

Its quite sad that the driver couldn't manage teh snow.

Probably lacking snow tires.

SUV's are absolute crap in the snow.
I run circles around them in my subaru.

Probably lacking snow tires.

Very good guess. Probably has an aggressive summer tread on that is essentially useless in the winter...as the pictures proove.

You would run circles around them in the Outback of Australia too.

it really does. Everyone there is so knowledgable and open minded.

I used to post a lot of threads on ATOT from there. I guess you started checking them out.

The "mighty" Cayenne is one of the worst possible vehicles for driving in snow. It's bloated beyond belief to cater to the luxury crowd, it's not intended for adverse conditions. If you get 5,000+ pounds sliding the wrong way on a slick hill it's impossible to get it back under control. Idiot drivers think 4WD is magic and will bail them out of anything. Wrongo.

doesn't matter how much techno no-slide wizardry you have, if you get 2+ Honda Civic's worth of weight moving, it takes a while to change it's direction.

Some people really need driving lessons.

Looks like that person braked into a slide. The idiot should have gunned it to pull themselves out of it.

Gunning it is almost as stupid as braking (though not quite). Any change in loading in limited traction is pretty bad. You'd want to ease into or out of the throttle, giving each tire the greatest chance to work against the slide.

Edit: Grr... can't type today.

Foot off the gas and brake, steer into the skid.
Or I'll came by and move you with this.

my biggest complaint about SUV Drivers in the snow is their sense of invincibility. a 4wd vehicle is not THAT much better on steady road.

what really annoys me about suv drivers are those that slam on their brakes thinking that their 4wd somehow makes them invincible. don't those morons realize that when you are braking the actual drivetrain has absolutely NOTHING to do with how well you stop??

I don't understand at all. If there is one thing driving in the snow has taught me, it's not to drive in the snow! Confidence is one thing, but I don't understand how people can feel like they can drive perfectly fine in the snow when they can't. I don't think I'd ever feel myself invincible in the snow, and I have just enough experience driving in it to realize that it scares me and I don't like it.

I'm sorta upset, it doesn't look like there was any body damage. And I doubt any other damage either, other than maybe to the ego, and a little to the checkbook for a tow (which they probably have covered under insurance or AAA). Wonder if any lessons were learned there.

i've driven quite a bit in the snow having gone thru many cold winters in Michigan. last couple of winters we've had some snow here in NJ also.

i can't say i'm confident driving in snow, but in 20 yrs of driving i've only gone off the road driving in snow ONCE and that was with my Mustang LX 5.0 (not the best of cars to drive in snow, one could say almost the worst of cars to drive in snow). but i agree, over confidence in snow and even in rain is just plain stupid. i'm a reasonably aggressive driver but i slow down quite a bit for rain or snow.

When you are in a slide like the one the Cayenne was in with very little distance before crashing, easing out of the throttle will not get you out of it. You need to get your 4 wheels moving to pull yourself out of it. If you just ease off, you'll end up wiping out just like she did.

I've lived and driven in a very rural mountainous area that got lots of snow. I've had to drive like this when going into slides. You slide, point your wheels into the direction you want to go, hit the accelerator and your wheels will dig you out. If you slide, turn your wheels, let off on the gas, nothing will happen. Make sense? Your wheels need to pull you out and hitting the accelerator to spin them until they grab is the only way out when you have very little time to stop.

Watch some winter rally racing, maybe you'll understand what I mean then.
