Figured I'd just go and start a new thread as I started a highjack of another one :p

But I just started playing about 5 days ago and I think I like it. Its complex enough to my tastes & the fact that I can do other stuff while I play it (ALT + TAB FTW!!!) is actually a plus due to my gamer ADD nature.

Really I'm just looking to find out more about the game from my fellow AT members. I haven't bothered asking anyone in game any advice and found a *ok* guide to help me with a couple of things (mainly training advice)

My first char is a miner and didn't know too much when I made him. I'll post up specs of stats when I get home from work. Don't know if I can use the same char to do multiple "class" stuff. Meaning running a "battle ship" + a mining craft. Was looking at buying a Destroyer tomorrow after I'm done training up for it and I've done enough mining to add a few new weapons to it.

but really now...whats the best way to get ISK...n00b question coming from a n00b.

i never understand this about EVE's fans.
"EVE is awesome! I can watch a movie, read a book, browse websites, do yoga, etc while i'm "playing" it."

How is NOT playing the game one of the plusses of playing it?

ok ok ok - doesn't make sense right - I know *but* I get bored pretty damned easy with games - usually they have a life span of 7 days with me. Regardless of the hours I put in to them, thats the average half-life before I put them down. I'm about at the middle point right now - and due to the fact that I can set & forget for a few minutes means I put my brain on to something else.

I can mine and mess around with building effects modules in Reaktor 5 or Ableton Live.

For some reason if I don't multitask I get burnt out fast

It's not just you. I've read the same thing on other forums with EVE fans. It's like a selling point for the game but it makes no sense. I buy a game to play it, not have it run in the background while i do something else, lol.

To answer your question.... and being a beta player and a 3+ years player, the plusses is, the game is complex enough where at times requires your full attention, ie pvp, or sometimes pve, but in some cases, such as travel or mining, doesn't require that much attention where you can easily alt tab away, watch movies, homework, whatever. During my time of eve, I found this to be great as I was a college student at the time and spent my days in the library mining (i had a manufacturer alt) and reading for my midterm, etc.
You have to play it to understand it, and i'm talking about really playing it, not just demo'ing the thing and then think you know the entire game and can comment on forums...

nefariouscaine: My advise is, join a care bear corp. There are a lot of friendly industrial type corps with their newbie systems in place. Trust me, you'll get so much free stuff its ridiculous. At this point in the game, small ships that you may consider expensive or big is small isk to people and corps. You'll get hand me downs. But generally, Industrial Corps are friendly and can help out any new comer. I came from Carbide Industries. [CAR]. I'm not sure if they still exist but they were the greatest peeps around.

After that, start and focus on your class, ie, Race. Focus on those spaceship command skills but don't forget those support type skills, like electronics, engineering. Those really help on your CPU and powergrid. Man, just talking about this makes me miss the game. I quit a year or two ago and gave my accounts, at the time, both had 30 mil + each skillpoints, along with a *gasp* Cap Recharger II BPO. I loved this game, but the alliance and politics crap turned me off. Anyways, good times!

Concerning the fact that "you can play the game while doing something else", as you advance in the game you start to have higher payout missions or mining opportunities in areas of the game (low sec space) where it becomes a very hostile and dangerous FFA. No one is there to protect you and at any given time you can be killed by pirates or PvPers... I honestly can't see how anyone can play while doing something else because it's happened to me several times where I would be afk for just a few minutes (or browsing the web etc.) and I would come back to me being in my pod and my ship being destroyed. It's even a risk seeking shelter and docking at corp owned stations or unsecured stations because pirates/PvPers can blow these up with you in them. Just warning for the OP that as you advance, you might want to pay attention or else you might learn a very expensive lesson.

Well I just went and bought my first time card - gonna wait until tonight to use it - got my destroyer skill & will be training my industrial class after getting off trial

Just got down mine/pod/mine/return - what ever ya wanna call it - podding after mining but I'm hoping to "change" that with using an industrial class ship. I need to keep in mind that EVE has down time right around when I get up for work so if I don't already have some skill training I'm kinda SOL on starting a new one (found that out the hard way this morning)

still looking for any advice - suggestions on a good corp to join??

A good corporation to join is EVE University. They teach noobies how to play the game from mining to PVP. They are located near 'Korsiki' in 'The Forge' Region.

http://www.ombeve.co.uk/ - go there for a PDF for the entire EVE universe in PDF. It has all sorts of information on the systems, including routes and security status.

http://myeve.eve-online.com/in...=topic&threadID=548883 - go there for a ship fitting tool

http://evemon.battleclinic.com/ - go there for Eve Character Monitor. you can plan out your skills and see your character training in real time from anywhere that the app is installed ( ie from work or a laptop ).

Just run missions. My wife averages 4 million a day (She's at 5 million today). This is not including any salvage. Plus, I build rigs and sell them for 16+ million. All in all, her and I average about 10-15 million a day. It's just the 2 of us in the corp.

its about not feeling/being obligated to play a game. you can play the game only when you feel like having some fun, and not really be penalized for sparse play time. when you get to the point where playing a game feels like a job or chore, the fun gets sucked out of it.

There are plenty of ways to make money in the game. The easiest way for noobs to make money is just running missions or ratting ( killing npc pirates in belts ). Other ways to make money which require a lot of training are mining, exploration, manufacturing, hauling, playing/trading in the market, providing services to other players like protection, refining services, etc. So there are plenty of ways to make ISK in EVE but some require less work/ or training then others. Again mission running and ratting are the easiest and fastest ways to make money but generally not the biggest money makers in the game.

The important thing is to find something you like doing and focus on that. If you get bored of let's say running missions then train up some exploration skills to find complexes and do that, etc... If you want some action then join a pirate/merc corp and make money by ransoming people or corps. I suggest you use EVEMON which is an application designed to help you organize, plan. setup and keep track of your characters training and skills. This way you won't be going off all scatter brained and end up training things you don't need to train. The great thing about EVE Online is that there is so much to do if you are willing to go out there and do it.

As for the whole "I can mine and watch tv" comments well it only applies to people doing so in high security space. If you are not paying attention in low sec or 0.0 space you are going to be podded faster then you realize. If you want action and excitement then hang out in heavily populated low sec or 0.0 space.

P.S. Never risk/fly anything you cannot afford to lose/replace.

Lots of good advice in some of the posts above.

I'll list my own, some of which reiterate what has already been said:

  • Join a High Sec carebear player corp, you'll make a lot of money. Find one that has team ops and split into one share per character, no matter the SP level
  • My main is a miner/mission runner. My alt is a trader/hauler/salvager. You can definetly have a multi-role char. Don't gimp any stat if you plan to do so. The more you min-max attributes, the less flexible your char is. Lots of players regret gimping charisma once they realize the value of fleet skills, trading skills, etc.
  • Contact me in-game if you're looking for a high sec industry-oriented player corp
  • Don't go for whatever makes more isk. Find out what you like and do it.
  • Avoid miracle isk-making solutions. Lots of players involved millions of SPs into Datacore whoring and now regret it
  • Bring learning skills up early. Get to 4-3, then do some role-related skills, and eventually come back to learning skills, etc. Target to have 5 & 4 in learning skills (basic and advanced) within 5-6 months. Skip the level 5 advanced skill as the return on the investment is very long, plus each Level 5 adv'd skill takes about half a month.
  • Any char can learn any skill and fly any ship. However, cross-training slows progress down. It's best to figure out what you want early, plan for it and then head on while avoiding cross-training and side-stepping
  • If you want a miner-mission runner char, you can start by mining with cruisers and then BS. A mining BS won't mine as well as an exhumer, but it gives you the advantage of being able to run missions in-between mining sessions. Aiming straight for a hulk limits your ability to run missions
