EVDO, ICS, and wireless questions.

Lemon law

Lifer
For years and years, I have effectively, cheaply, reliably net worked two XP desktop computers together using windows ICS and and the one time investment in a 55 foot cross over cable. For most of those years, I was only on super duper slow dial up account, because it was the only option available to me in a rural location. ( other than satellite which required a huge up front investment and poor speed. )

In 11/2009, Verizon built a cell phone tower within 2 miles of me, and suddenly Verizon EVDO became an option, and because I bought my own USB EVDO modem on my own, and can thus get a month by month contract rather than being forced to sign a 2 year contract.
The down side is the same $60.00/mo fees and the other downside is a 5 GB/mo cap. And the upside is I get a 1.3 Mbits a second connection which beats the heck out of 40Kbits a second. And unlike what all the network guru's on this forum told me, ICS may work without a router on dial up, but would screw up at higher speeds. That has proved to be just another total old wives tale because ICS is still rock solid.

But now I have a complication due to to a death in my family, I have inherited a HP dv2915nr lap top that I seldom use. But its Vista OS still needs updated, both in terms of windows update but also other various antivirus and other security programs. And the other thing to note is that laptop is capable of joining wireless short range wifi networks at various places like public libraries. Of course the downside is no such wifi network is within 10 miles of me.

But suddenly I finally have a reason to get that router I never needed, I not only have a 3 computer situation with only one NIC on each desk top computer, I also have a mixed OS situation. The damn downside is that EVDO routers cost 5 times more than regular dsl or cable modem routers. Basically $200.00 plus.

Ideally I could just add some cheap USB thingie, still use ICS to network the two XP computers together using ICS and a cross over cable, and have the USB thingie provide wifi for the lap top.

Can anyone on this forum tell me how to make my dream come true? Or am I still up the creek without a paddle?

While it would be better to have a router providing access to all computers, EVDO capable routers can be very expensive. Get a basic wireless router, set it up as a switch/access point by disabling DHCP on the router, connect your wired computers to LAN ports on the router (don't use the WAN/Internet port) and connect your laptop to the wireless signal from the router. Your XP machine with the EVDO card will continue to run ICS and provide Internet access to the two computers.

I cannot say that Fardingle is wrong, but sorry, can you translate that into step by agonizing step just plain English for a network dummy like me.

Exactly what recommended hardware do I need and what connects to what?

Get the router. Connect it to the computer that does not have the evdo. Power up the router. Once it powers up, you should be able to navigate to it through a web browser by going to 192.168.0.1. Go into the router, and disable DHCP (this is what gives all your computers ip addresses).

Now, go to the computer that is hooked to the evdo modem. Go the network setup wizard, and setup a new wired network. Tell it that other computers connect THROUGH this computer to the internet. Select the evdo as your internet connection and the lan card as the way that other computers connect to it. (This is windows XP, mileage may vary with other systems).

Now connect the lan cord from the router to this computer.

That should do it. Now the computer that is connected to the EVDO modem will hand out DHCP network addresses to the other two, and they should be able to get out on the net.

This is the exact setup I have in my house, but I have 3 wireless computers and use sprint.

Editting for order.....
