So that's why there was so much Evangelion promotions at Sunshine City yesterday in Ikebukuro - never watched it but seems to be pretty popular with my students.

When will 2.0 be released on DVD in Japan?

Screw DVD, I want bluray. 1.0 looks fantastic in high def.

Yeah I've been meaning to check out 1.11. I don't have a BluRay player but I'd like to pick Rebuild up in high-def eventually (assuming we get the BluRay editions in the US, I'd assume they plan to release those here).

pretty robots.
philosobabble not so good.

This. There are better animes out there.

Name one :p

Rah Xephon is like Evangelion but with, you know, actual character development, a decent plot, and a nice lack of pseudo-philosophy.

Evangelion is pretty and has a nice art direction. The anime has a few amazing scenes, but overall its a disappointment. I kept waiting for something to happen with the characters, but they just remain pretty stagnant throughout the entire series. Not to mention the plot is pretty weak, and the story suffers from pacing issues and attempting to be too serious towards the end.

EDIT: Ask for general animes better than Evangelion, there are tons. I would list my own preferences, but that is just my personal opinion.

NGE is pretty decent action anime if you just want to sit back, watch, and not get too involved (kind of like Transformers 2). It's not bad by any means. It just lacks certain aspects that keep me from considering it as great. It's too mindless.

SSE has the same sort of illogical fan following as Akira... another over-hyped anime (movie).

I actually found it way more enjoyable after digging deeper and looking for all the metaphors and whatnot...

For mindless fun I found Full Metal Jacket: Fumuffu to be quite excellent. Of course, I was on shrooms at the time, so that may have played a part.

The metaphors are just philosophical fluff. There's nothing there but a failed attempt to save the show from being shallow. :p

You mean Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
Good series, very funny, but the original FMP and FMP:TSR were better

Whoops, definitely FMP: Fumoffu. I actually couldn't get into the original FMP, but I didn't try very hard either. I retired from anime shortly thereafter =X

Wonderful Days (Korean Anime Film) is quite good. Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are rightfully legendary series. NGE never did anything for me.
