Hi, I want to build a new pc that is fast but reasonably priced? want it to be good for gaming, but no need for ridiculous graphics? here is the system I came up with:

EVGA 122-CK-NF63-TR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
Model #: 122-CK-NF63-TR
Item #: N82E16813188019
$150

XFX PVT84JUDD3 GeForce 8600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card
Model #: PVT84JUDD3
Item #: N82E16814150229
$150

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6420
Model #: BX80557E6420
Item #: N82E16819115016
$186

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ
Model #: F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ
Item #: N82E16820231065
$109

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
Model #: ST3320620AS
Item #: N82E16822148140
$80

TOTAL: $675

I chose these based on newegg reviews (and prices)? sounded like this would be compatible, good bang for buck, and capable of running vista?

What do you think? My proposal is based only on several hours of investigations? would love to get some expert opinions!

Thanks.

Vista is the stupidest OS I have ever used. I'd avoid it like the plague, if I were you.

8600GT is slow... also i doubt it will have any real playable FPS on a DX10 title on mid high res with everything high. So i recommend you get a 8800GTS 320MB.

Also, look at this board instead, perhaps. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813130081

um.. i think its really close. and im not sure but ti think the 8600gts is faster than the 7950gt. also, drop the sli board, get a DS3 or something and spend the extra money on an e6600.

Not according to this. :D

I wonder though, it's not a 'big' difference'. and it's DX10 support. Did I waste $160 on the 7950 I just bought? :(

8600GTS has trouble beating up a 7900GS in 80% of title and let alone take down a x1950pro. No one way in hell it could beat up a 7950GT without some major driver tweaking by nvidia parts or they handicap 7950GT by not tweaking drivers for newer games.

I'd pay 90$ bucks extra for the 8800 320mb, it will last you a LONG time and is pretty good bang for your buck. But then again, getting this http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814131027 wouldn't be a bad choice either. This is all in perspective, I myself have 1 system with a 7600gs, and it's still playing todays games, if not at the highest settings, but it still does okay and doesn't look bad. So for you that x1950 pro will probably do just fine.

heh that x1950xt is a great deal, shady brand though ? Never heard of it. As for the asus x1950 pro, yeah, better then what I suggested, slightly less clockspeed, 600 vs 580, but it's asus, and no hassle with rebates.

The ATi cards do not support DVC, Sharpness controls, and from what I could tell they each take up two slots. For me, I need 3 PCI slots - so two-slot video cards are out of the question.

That said, they're good products. I just think nVidia is better.
