Here's my current system:
AMD 3500 Athlon64
Asus A8V motherboard
6800GT AGP Video Card
74GB Raptor + a bunch of other drives for storage
1 GB Micron DDR
Audigy Soundcard
2405fpw 24" Widescreen LCD
17" HP LCD
Antec TruePower 550watt PSU
I've been due for a upgrade for a while now (Oblivion on a 24" + 6800GT is just painful...) but I've been waiting for Vista to come out. I usually do a big upgrade every 2-3 years and was originally planning on doing that again (going full boat with 8800gtx, etc.) but now I'm thinking about getting this system instead:
$250.00 EVGA 122-CK-NF68-AR LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX
$220.00 Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.16GHz
$120.00 eVGA GeForce 7600GT 256MB PCI-X Video Card
$284.00 Crucial Technology Ballistix 2GB kit DDR2-800 PC2-6400 Memory
$220.00 WD Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
$150.00 OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI ATX12V 700W Power Supply
And then whenever UT2007 or Crysis comes out, getting a Quad-Core and whatever the 8800 refresh turns out to be.
So, I do some gaming on the PC, but I primarily use it for work (I work from home). I also do some video editing, etc.
I'm also going to get a new HDTV this summer. I'm planning on then keeping the 7600GT to run my 17" LCD and using the new 8800 to power the 24" and the HDTV. That way I can run dual monitors for work stuff and also have the option to game on the HD.
Thoughts? To run the 17", 24" and HD off of the 2 vid cards, all I would have to do is setup 2 profiles in the nVidea settings and then switch them, right? Also, anyone have any opinions about the on-board sound on the 680i, or would I be better off with just keep using my Audigy? On last thing, do you think most retailers are planning on running hardware sales to coincide with the Vista launch? So would I be better off waiting until after Jan 31 to start buying parts? Thanks.
