You would think the Volt proved that EV doesn't offer people enough reason to pay a premium for EV. Gas prices would have to be a lot higher to justify $20K more. Only 100 mile range too. Though looks they are just testing the waters.

Toyota hopes to sell around 2,600 RAV4 EVs during the next three years.

Their sales target of less than 900 units/year means that they aren't interested in profits at all for this model. It's a proof of concept.

Honda is doing the same thing for the Fit EV; in fact, Honda isn't even allowing people to purchase the car. It's lease-only, with no buy-out option.

Yeah, nobody is hoping to sell these based on a practical argument. These cars are for people who love EV; you'll pay a premium for it now and never make your money back.

And only 100 mile range? Why not the Leaf for cheaper then?

Jpeyton and Doppel covered what I was going to say.

Of course it's an idiotic vehicle by any metric really at that cost. But it still has some value to Toyota in abstract fashion even if it never makes a dime on that particular model.

I bet it is the most cost-effective way to test EVs in real-world driving conditions.

My mom has a RAV4. Its a piece of shit.
I cant imagine spending 50 grand on one of them. And all those gadgets inside dont make it special.

These sort of half assed attempts just make the Tesla's look even better for the $$.

Wait a second, I thought the price of the Volt was the result of the inefficiencies brought on by the bungling of non-asian/european minds being applied to new concepts and the Juggernaut that is the Union mucking up every aspect of the production process.

Hmm, I guess this is just what it takes.

Does that mean that they're evil and killing the electric car?

My question is, what does it cost to charge one of these to full? Somehow, I don't think it'd offset the additional $30k for the vehicle over 5 years.

I almost got one. I'd consider it again. They are bland and revvy and "cheap", but they also have a very reliable drive train and if you're looking for a cheap 4WD/AWD vehicle they are pretty decent (hopefully the next model, 2013 will be a step up from the aging one out now).

A decent rule of guesstimation is 120mpg electric equivalent. Definitely won't save 30k over 5 years. EPA estimated fuel cost is about $2400/year for a new RAV4 at all...
