Man... I wish Americans could get some too... we are so far behind in that area...

Seriously though, as for as i remember in the last 5 years they discovered just one particle... with a bigger one what do they hope to achieve.
On the flip side I am glad the socialist nations are investing more on science, this capitalistic country is going down the drain and focusing only on social engineering...

The american gov't wouldn't support the Superconducting Super Collider. Sorry.

We do have a hadron collider. It's simply located in Europe. The US paid for more than 10% of the LHC bill and has been involved in most of the experiments. It was a wise move to let the Eurotopians deal with the black holes and head crabs.

Well we weren't going to let you put in in the US. What with the riots and complete collapse of society you are going to experience when your economy collapses.

Right. Liverpool loses a football game; fans tear hole in the fabric of time-space.

Maybe if you conveniently forget Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain.

Maybe if you guys hadn't elected such short-sighted assholes to Congress, we'd have the SSC by now and the US would be on the forefront of particle physics, instead of having to beg the Europeans for their cooperation.

I'm not sure what kind of doublethink you have to be employing to think that this was a good move that you made 20 years ago.

We could build our own but are too busy paying for Europeans defense. I suspect if the United States would pull their military complex out of Europe the money for these fantastic projects may dry up as it is spent on their military.

It was a great move. The SCSC was a money-sucking pig. The project proponents, testifying before Congress, couldn't come up with one practical reason to build it. Hobbits are more than welcome to pay for one though.

Despite such global funding, he was adamant that the new machine should still be built in Europe. "Over the past few decades, Europe has provided the security and resources that have ensured particle physics has reached its current status," he said. "We have shown what Europe can do. This is the home of particle physics and it should be the home of the next great particle collider that the world constructs."
And Europe gets all that construction funding, jobs, etc., not to mention that this cutting edge research isn't happening in our own back yard anymore.

They missed one huge reason: basic scientific research has driven us to most of the greatest inventions. Entire industries are developed due to basic scientific research. It would be as if we could travel back in time, and say, "we're not helping anyone with funding for this research on electrons. What the hell good are these electron things. They're smaller than this so-called atom."

We're getting the research done at a 90% discount.

American bases and personnel in Europe are all there for your convenience these days, there is no enemy at the gates as far as Europe is concerned.

Concur. It is time to stop spending our money on the defense of 1st world countries that are more than capable of defending themselves (western Europe, South Korea, Japan, ...)

Yeah...but we lost most of our space-program funding too. You have to remember that the US is currently going through hard times thanks to the past 13 years of recessions, wars, and massive debt accrual.

The US has more important things to spend money on, like funding the NSA and TSA.

So if we completely left, and I mean completely; removed the nuclear umbrella, left NATO, just reverted to full-blown isolationism where Europe is concerned, you think Russia wouldn't get expansionist?

the EU member states have a larger standing military, larger reserve and over twice the military budget. We have more recent combat experience, our own nukes and we are the world's largest economy. Russia wont get stupid any time soon.

money sucking pigs? The new Ford Carrier cost $12 billion. For one fucking ship. Who the hell are we fighting with an aircraft carrier in 2013?

A much better investment would have been a large scale research project such as the LHC.
