edit: oooops, u're right ... they were born english but immigrated to australia. muh bad

i change my statement: no good metal has come outta europe then 😀
OK.....what about the Scorpions?

That's rock.

And over here we have a lot of 'metal only' record companies, started by fans/bands and ignoring companies like Sony and EMI. It never really died out around here, while in the US it never really got started past the most popular bands, as the record industry managed to stop it. Try finding metal albums in US stores, from for example a reasonably well selling band like Cradle of Filth (black metal). Any record store selling that in the US will be torched by the Christian fundies, also known as the US Taliban.
Hate to break it to you but some of their music is heavy metal.....depends upon the period, their early stuff is definitely heavy metal and if AC/DC is considered HM then the definition you are using is pretty loose anyways.

Heavy Metal is a subgroup of Metal, played by bands like Helloween, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc.
Hard Rock is another subgroup of Metal, and is played by for example Queen, The Scorpions, Motorhead, etc. Some play it all the time, some only once in a while (Motorhead plays Blues some of the time too, The Scorpions and Queen play(-ed) Rock most of the time)
Actually Rock is the genre and Heavy Metal etc. is a style. AC/DC is considered rock and HM is one of their styles just like the Scorpions. If you are going to be an arrogant ass at least get it right.

BTW check this link and it lists them as a heavy metal band..... Heavy Metal

I don't really know of any.

I know that Iced Earth is pretty popular in Europe, at least compared to the states... but they're from the states.

I've been listening to this band called Amon Amarth.. pretty cool stuff. A band called Arch Enemy is cool, too.. The female vocalist is interesting.

I'm not a big fan of the death metal scream, but if the music is good enough, I'll put up with it.

this is the same place that likes john tesh, and where the backstreet boys rose to fame, so all their music interests are suspect

Eli, I just discovered Arch Enemy. I was blown away when I realized that the vocalist was female. How in the world can she scream like that?? I love death vocals; much of what I listen to is European metal: Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, In Flames, Soilwork, Opeth, Extol... There are some good American metal bands too, like Iced Earth and Nile.

LethalWolfe, the only "theory" I have is that it's a different culture and for-whatever reason Europe spawns more "metal" bands is akin to the US spawning more "alternative" bands IMO 🙂

the US record companies spawn "alternative" bands like the zerg spawn hydralisks. funky eggs and all.

Bwahahahahah!!! Perfect analogy!

Alt bands = boy/girl groups nowadays. 🙁

I never got into the black metal/death metal scene. And what my generation (growing up in the 80's and being called "hessians" cuz of our long hair) called heavy metal, is now being called Rock or Classic Rock :Q.

Probably Pantera is as far as I go now. Guess that's why I don't listen to KNAClive anymore...

I think alot of it has to do with the fact that Metal of pretty much any kind seems to be far more popular in Europe.
Take SymphonyX for example, a great American band, and AFAIK they've yet to go tour in the US, IIRC they'll be going on a tour soon though.
They've been touring in Europe/Asia/South America though, in fact I saw them a couple of months along with Stratovarius.

For power metal, nothing beats Germany though, so many good power metal bands have come out of there 🙂

if you like all those bands then you would like Shadowed Beneath too. they list almost all of them as their influences. PM me for more mp3s than what they have on mp3.com.

</shameless promotion> 😛
