What is it about Europe that enables it to spawn so many awesome metal bands? From the usually more complex and melodic Power Metal to skull crushing, soul killing Death Metal it seems that Europe is usually the breeding group for most the influencial<sp?> and/or ground breaking metal bands.

Any theories?

I associate European Metal with squeeling, high-pitched vocalists. Not my style.

AC/DC was australian. last time i checked australia had its own continent.

I can't stand European Metal, especially bands like In Flames... However there are a few cool British metal bands, a lot of AWESOME (not so well known) British rock bands.

It probably has more to do with the popularity of the music genre rather than
the 'quality' of the bands. I think this genre is more popular in europe at this
time (and most other times) so you get more record companies looking for these
bands which creates more fan interest which in turn creates a more favorable
environment for new musicians. The US seems to be in a funk with Heavy Metal
right now. Give it some time. Just my opinion which probably isn't worth much.

LethalWolfe, the only "theory" I have is that it's a different culture and for-whatever reason Europe spawns more "metal" bands is akin to the US spawning more "alternative" bands IMO :)

Even though i dont listen to metal as often as i did....maybe its because they dont have so many "crap" bands, like we do over in america..they do pretty much whatever they want....like in other contries they can do whatever...hrm, i should give an example. Like in Japan they have all of those weird fetishes..(cant name any sorry)....I like the sounds of some of those euro metals bands....

That's partially what I was thinking too.

Of course I really enjoy Power Metal (which seems to be a European only genre) so my opinion might be a bit skewed. ;)

European metal rocks. I got some hungarian metal the other day, and other than the vocals, its pretty damn good. Kalapacs is the name of the band. The latest dimmu borgir album (death cult armageddon) is pretty good too.

That's rock.

And over here we have a lot of 'metal only' record companies, started by fans/bands and ignoring companies like Sony and EMI. It never really died out around here, while in the US it never really got started past the most popular bands, as the record industry managed to stop it. Try finding metal albums in US stores, from for example a reasonably well selling band like Cradle of Filth (black metal). Any record store selling that in the US will be torched by the Christian fundies, also known as the US Taliban.

the US record companies spawn "alternative" bands like the zerg spawn hydralisks. funky eggs and all.

Hate to break it to you but some of their music is heavy metal.....depends upon the period, their early stuff is definitely heavy metal and if AC/DC is considered HM then the definition you are using is pretty loose anyways.

thanx for the link man. I d/l the 2 songs they had at mp3.com. They sound sound pretty good, but they also sound like they are holding back. IMO, there needs to be a bigger "punch" coming from the band otherwise the growling vocals just roll over everything else. All though I do like the "singer" more than the "growler", but that's just a personal prefernce. I wish they had more songs for d/l. Where is Shadowed Beneath from anyway?

Heavy Metal is a subgroup of Metal, played by bands like Helloween, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, etc.
Hard Rock is another subgroup of Metal, and is played by for example Queen, The Scorpions, Motorhead, etc. Some play it all the time, some only once in a while (Motorhead plays Blues some of the time too, The Scorpions and Queen play(-ed) Rock most of the time)
