European destinations - east or west itinerary? Plus, looking for anyone who's ever taken the Glacier Express train

I've already been a few times and have some spots in mind, but wanted to get some suggestions from the ATOT crew. Will be flying Philadelphia-Frankfurt and doing some family history research first (in world-famous Albig, Germany - such a huge city it's not even shown in any atlas I've checked 😉 and then after that it's whatever sounds good.

Jungfrau Joch - Top of Europe in Switzerland 🙂 If there's nice weather, it's suppose to be soooooooo awesome.

Definitely possible. I'm basically thinking one of two approaches, either east or west.

West would be south to Zurich, ride the Glacier Express down to Montreux, and then to Nice and Provence for some sun and sights. Lugano to wrap up before heading home. Probably the more sedate option.

Eastern option would be Innsbruck, Ljubljana, Ceske Krumlov, and Krakow. Definitely more travel and shorter stays, but also not the same tour 89 year old Aunt Millicent from Milwaukee is on either.

Opinion: It's more fun for me to sort of "dwell into" a place for a while, even get to know some locals, really "make it mine."
That ends up more satisfying than when I cover a lot of territory in a hurry. Better memories, more fun.

So, suggestion #1 is, pick a base spot to stay, and take lots of day excursions out & back. Germany would be a real nice place to pick a town in the West side & go see the East side.

Or suggestion #2 is, from Germany it'd be a nice time to drive down through Switz & go through the Gotthard Road Tunnel under the Alps to Italy.

Lucerne is definitely one of the nicest cities in Switzerland so I would suggest you visit Lucerne buuuuuuut it's kinda touristy so. What else is there to see in Switzerland /me thinks 😀

Well he might like to take that train above Grindelwald that goes up inside Mt. Eiger to the glacier. I've done that.

The thing about beautiful Switzerland is, it's expensive as all getout there.

Yep, that would be the Jungfrau Joch, also known as Top of Europe, although I have no idea why it should be the top of Europe because it's not the highest point in Europe 😀

The french part is also nice, around the Lake Leman, Montreux, etc. but I think at the moment, it might be too cold, it's around 2° Celsisus.

Name some spots and it might just happen... I'm completely open for possibilities on this trip...

We have better beer and prettier ladies than the swiss...

Yes, I'll testify to that! Finland, Sweden = hotttttttt babes!

1000 years ago Vikings killed everybody they fought except they took the most beautiful women back home, so Scandanavia got stocked up with a really high % of the most beautiful women. Wow!

Do you run out of the hot sauna & jump naked into the lake through a hole in the ice?

AH... yes he may you cun*
It's like I'll say south Florida is crap, it's my earned privilege to claim so (though I wouldn't say it, 'cause south FL is sort of cool so far...)

It's really too bad that http://beautifulzueri.blogspot.com is down, there was a very nice selection of women that hang out in Switzerland 😀 might check archive.org, not sure if they also archive pictures though. And I got the HOTTEST Swiss Babe anyway 😀

Has anyone here ever taken the Swiss "Glacier Express" train? I'm considering itinerary right now and I'd like to do this, but it's definitely going to be a time commitment which could be possibly used more productively.

Oh, thats a great journey... if you like trains and bridges and tunnels... and then some more tunnels and bridges and some looong tunnels and looong bridges. And the views are great! (when you're not in a tunnel, did I say there were lot of tunnels). 😛 But if you are doing the whole trip, thats something like 8 hours in a train. You can kill 2 hours in a dining kart (make sure to reserve in advance!), but it does get boring after a while. I've done it once, and it is one of THE train trips in the world. But would not do it again.

Its another thing if its on your way, going from A to B. Then definately do it!

-Just to say you've done, hmmmm... maybe not.
-Just for the scenery, NO. There are better ways to see great sceneries in Swiss alps.
-Because the food is good. YES, we got great service and good food.
-Other reasons... I'll try and think of something. Its been a while since I took it.

Oh, and St.Moritz and Davos are quite boring little cities. Not what you would excpect (if you have expectations that is) 😛

Nice is, well, nice, but i wouldn't go back. while it's a nicer resort town than you can find in the states, it's still essentially a beach resort.
