I'm trying to plan a trip to europe next winter with a few college friends. I'm going to be leaving just before thanksgiving and returning on x-mass. So far the plan is to begin in Berlin (because 2 of us are going to be there for the semester, and I have family there), and we have no plans beyond that. Has anyone traveled in Europe in the winter? what do you suggest? I assume heading south would be a good idea. Maybe head to Munich, then over to france, then spain, hit up the riviera or something? Then maybe into Italy? Does anyone have any recommendations? Also, any suggestions for awesome locations besides major cities? just throw some ideas at me!

I've never been to Europe, but I'd want to go to Christmassy locations. Scandinavia, Germany, Switzerland...

Part of me wants to do that... but then I'd have to lug around tons of winter clothing and worry about freezing to death and all that. Just something to consider.

You could hardly go wrong anywhere. It's all new to you. East block countries to save money, everything else to see what's up :^)

Vienna has a nice Christmas Carnival. Switzerland is gorgeous.

I spent the Christmas week in Borgogne (Chaipez, Cluny, Taize, etc), but we had a friend hosting us. Not terribly much to do in that area if you don't have a local introducing you around.

I was in Florence for that season, I don't remember anything particularly special about it. Avoid Milan if you can, but that goes for every day of any year ;)

Many of those are #$%^ expensive now, being affiliated with the euro. Or, at least no cheaper than anywhere else.

Long gone are the days of a fine 5 course meal + 3 dank pilsners for ~$4 in Prague. :(

You'll definitely be able to go to a Christkindlmarkt... have some gluhwein and some crepes :)
