This is something I would expect to see some right wing legislator in Alabama to try, but I'm very surprised to see this happening for all of Europe.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57572947-93/eu-to-vote-on-porn-ban-calls-for-internet-enforcement/

And because the bill encompasses "any media," the belief is by Engström that this will also include the Web, social networks, emails, and include even the photos that European citizens upload.

That's just plain insane to me. Just goes to show you that it's not just the fundies that are intent on controlling your personal activities, the left is just as eager to control them, just for different reasons.

Surprising to see this happening in the EU. I guess this is what happens when you reach full insanity level of political correctness.

Based on some quick checking, it looks to me like CNet did an atrocious job of reporting this story. Unfortunately, I don't have time right now to dig further, but as I understand it this came from a women's group focused on gender discrimination, that group drafted this feel-good statement about how the media portrays women, the EU Parliament is voting to (potentially) show support for women (though it's also a feel-good vote that will have no legal effect), and CNet, in a blatant attempt to stir up horny Internet nerds, presents this as voting to ban porn. But again, that's just my take after a quick read of the OP's link and one link from CNet. I may well be missing something.

That's because you've been brainwashed to believe that the right are the moral police. Have you forgotten Clinton's Communications Decency Act of 1996 that was essentially struck down by the Republican led Supreme Court?

It is not possible to ban internet porn. It just won't happen. Ultimate game of whack-a-mole.

So its from a women's group that doesn't trust women to make decisions about their body. :whiste:

That's very true in practical terms, but I'm still amazed to see something so broad and crazy potentially getting passed by the EU parliament.

I figured something like this had to be at play, but I don't know enough about the inner workings of the EU and various governing bodies there to know if this would have teeth or not. The fact that the EU parliament is voting on something so absurd is very telling. PC run amok.

Well, we have threads all the time about what threshold must be crossed before a genuine first-world revolution breaks out. This may well be it.

Doesn't say much for the first-world, does it?

When you realize that the uber progressive leftist liberal is just as intolerant of personal freedom as a right-wing uber conservative, then this wouldn't surprise you at all. This is what you get when you combine feminism + police state kleptocracy.

Or Tipper Gore's labeling of "evil" music.

You definitely are missing something, but you got this right even without having it. ;)

The whole European project will collapse before porn is taken away from their citizens.

His modus operandi is to not support his position and then later claim he did so. Any moment now the loser will appear and claim he supported his position.
