A predictable course of action, and even understandable due to recent events. Still, I don't see it happening (yet).

EU bids for power over national budgets

Senior administrators of the European Union proposed on Wednesday that they be given unprecedented power to scrutinize the spending plans of countries before national parliaments vote on those budgets.

The EU's executive commission's bid was a move to crack down on widespread government overspending and to begin to deal with the debt crisis that threatens the exchange value of the euro.
The commission is the administrative arm of the European Parliament and is independent of national governments.

It also proposed serious financial penalties for countries that break the rules — essentially forcing governments to pay a financial penalty that could eventually be returned to them.

The move came as European governments scramble to deal with their deficits.

Act irresponsibly and someone is gonna take charge. I'm sure this will be controversial considering the Sovereignty implications, but when your Irresponsible behaviour impacts on others you are asking for it.

Simple enough. Let Greece sink. But since they have tied all their $$ together....

But who's to say the EU can do any better? As I read about this yesterday there's a difference between looking at it (as Merkel said their budget is public) and doing something about it. I'm sure it would put Germans into even more of a frenzy if the EU was dictating their budget. They'd rightly tell it where to go.

I should not be surprised to see a US like government, where the EU assumes power and the individual nations have token rights.

That's a stupid move. All you all that just want to let X Die really haven't considered the implications. You think Markets reacted strongly to the current situation, multiply that by 10 if you just let Greece sink.

What has been implemented averts Global Economic disaster and forces Greece to fix their mess. It's a Win-Win.

The Cloward-Piven strategy at work. Overload the system to achieve your goal. When orchestrated properly, a radical solution appears to be a rational reaction to a given set of circumstances. Many sheep will fall for it in its entirety.

No one can answer that, but they already know who has fucked up or is fucking up. To just ignore them because they don't know if the EU will do better is dumb.

If the EU's $$ wasn't tied together, would Greece have even made the news? Their stupidity would. 14mo pay for 12mo work. Retire at 53.

I agree with you. It just pisses me off that US $$ are going to fund them.

Well it was bound to happen. Since they are in a union now, even if only monetary, the actions of one country have ramifications on the actions of others. The other countries were bound to start demanding that they have a say in the other nations' behavior to ensure that they do nothing harmful to the union as a whole.

I was just going to say the same thing. I mean an EU failure hurts us so we have a right to apparently.
And their citizenry is unarmed. We could take over faster than Hitler took France. Oh, wait. The French want to be bent over.:(

It's interesting that in Europe the EU is tends to be a pressure against spending. The federal government in the US tends to trigger increases in spending.
