Ethylene absorbtion in a fridge crisper

My brother came home with some little puck like dodad that contained a powder. The instructions say to put it in the cripser and the particulate will circulate and absorb the ethylene given
off by ripening fruit and vegatables.

Ethylene (C2H4) must then be oxidized so I am curious as to what the powder in this puck is.

I hate to ask a stupid question but what difference does it make if there is ethylene in your fridge or not? Does it smell bad? Does your lettuce wilt? Does the milk go sour? I thought when you mixed ethylene oxide and water you got ethylene glycol. Why would you want to make anti-freeze at home?

ethylene will cause rapid ripening in fruits and vegetables that don't produce much ethylene... Tomatoes and bananas create a lot of ethylene, while orangles don't... To test this put an orange in a basket
of bananas, and put another orange in a basket by itself. They orange with the bananas will ripen at an extreme rate.

Interesting tidbit on ethylene
