Alright, so I find myself requesting information for a particular graduate program, and, well, one of the question calls for identification of your particular ethnic group. Anyways, so here are the options:

-white
-black
-pacific islander-Asian
-Native American
-Hispanic

Last I checked, neither white nor black are "ethnic groups."

This particular one didn't have "other," as an option. Most, in fact, do have "other" and will allow you to write something in or will give you the option of not disclosing your "ethnicity."

I wonder what happens if you selected "black" or "hispanic," after all, by whose definition are we going by - and was accepted - would that be grounds for disqualification? Probably

I've always been tempted to put black in but i've never applied for a job which asked it and was only asked once for undergrad and once for grad and forgot to do it along the way. Wonder if you'd be bombarded with scholarships etc? try it. soul man.

They would probably send you to federal prison, if you were to receive grants and such. In any case, I don't look "black" nor "white." Hypocrisy, I think so.

I'm in the East Bay of San Francisco. This is a giant issue here as well as in the census. As you may know, one of the ballot issues on the Schwarzenneger ballot was to abolish the collection of racial data in California (defeated by a big margine). This is an issue that doesn't affect me directly since I'm pretty much straight eight WAS (but not protestant). Most of the problem here seems to center on the fact that the categories simply don't fit the people. One person here who was of a very complicated racial/ethnic mixture told his children that they were "All of the above."
