Yes, it's actually quite delicious, and a very social food. You tear off pieces of bread and pick up the piles of food with it... spicy/lemony lamb, beans, chicken, etc.

I did not like the bread much - too soggy and weird sour taste

the other stuff was very tasty....and the honey wine is delish 🙂

It's actually less spicy than most Indian food... different herbs are used, and the neverending plate of light, fluffy, bubbly bread they serve with the piles of food is much different from nan. I like both, but they definitely have their distinct qualities.

Is there an Ethiopian neighborhood in your area? You should try it sometime, I'd highly recommend it. 🙂

Yeah, the bread is pretty soft and spongy... I think it's brushed/flavored with lemon, which probably explains that taste (not supposed to be too sour though).

*thumbs up for honey wine* (don't drink too much though, or you'll have a raging hangover because it's so sweet)

Ethiopian dessert coffee = also good (VERY strong!)

dont think so, theres a lot of soul food and chix wing restaurants in my neighborhood. But ill check with Ethiopian. I like trying new stuff.

If/when you do, let me know how it goes. 🙂 I love the lamb dishes myself...

i've had it a few times. it IS good. ethiopan food too. there's a place called cafe lalibela in tempe. i love the food there.

Honey mead is probably humankind's oldest acoholic beverage.

They vary from very sweet to very dry. Meads can have fruit and herbs added. Drink more mead to become in touch with the pagan inside.

Its very easy to make, but takes at least 9 months and some equipment.

Basic recipe:

10-15 pounds of pure honey
5 gallons of water
some yeast nurtient *
mead yeast *

Heat water and dissolve honey. Cool to below 80 F and pitch yeast. Store in a 5 gal glass carboy* with airlock*.

* can be purchased at any homebrew / wine making store.

The ethiopian bread (Injera) is actually made with buckwheat flour and regular flour, as well as baking soda and club soda of all things. As far as I know it isn't brushed with lemon. Personally I think the flavor is more like sourdough bread, which I like a lot.

For all of you who are skeptical about ethiopian food, let me assure you the looks are far different from the taste, save for Gored Gored. Gored Gored is, quite simply, meat cubes + ethiopian spicy sauce. (Berbere sauce) It's utterly simplistic and incredibly tasty. Most everything else ethiopian is very tasty, provided you have no problems with spicy stuff.

I actually drive to Vegas about once a month in part because of the ethiopian restaurants down there. (All the neat cuisine for that matter) Trust me, ignore the looks and try it.

It tastes very similar to some Indian/Iranian/Turkish dishes. It is quite good, however the spices that they use will give you a bad case of BO if you consume too much of it.

I love Ethiopian / Eritrean food, and especially mead. I had a course in College (one of those cushy "Break in the freshmen to life on their own" deals) that required trying food from a country I had never tried before, and the experience got me hooked. A good Afghani restaurant is worth checking out if you have one in your city as well.

Ethiopian dishes aren't for everyone however. I've taken a date to Ethiopian before and the experience was a disaster, the sight of the food made them ill. If you're grossed out by some Indian dishes, then you might want to be warry about trying Ethiopian food.

One fun fact I remember from having written a short paper on the subject - you traditionally eat Ethiopian food with your right hand only. The left hand is traditionally used for... well... let's just say you wouldn't eat with your left hand either if you used it for that traditional purpose.

We all know the traditional punishment for shoplifting in the arab world was cutting off a hand -- bad enough by itself -- but they made sure to cut off your right hand. That way you were forced to eat with the same hand you *ahem* wiped with.
