Ethics of Dumpster Diving?

What are the ethics of dumpster diving...i know its pretty much illegal, but say if my office were to be trashing a bunch of equipment...and i were to let people on AT know "hey we're throwing out some X systems, on X date, enjoy!"

just hate to see some of this stuff goto waste, but i dont want to grab it all and have to deal with shipping some of it.

They threw it away, they don't want it. Up for grabs. I believe there have been several court decisions on this topic. The biggest issue is trespassing. If they see you there, and ask you not to come back, you can't.

Diving for electronics and other "neat" throw-aways = OK 🙂 🙂

Diving for tossed out food = Just plaing gross

for sure... i've found some cool stuff before that way 😀

There is/was (haven't looked lately) a gargantuan thread over at Hardforum with everybody listing their dumpster diving takes. Some people come away with some pretty nice finds. There are some funny stories about their experiences too.

No ethics envolved....Cops do it ALL the time when staking out a suspect. Just means you are a cheap bastard 😉

Is it illegal? Only if you have to tresspass to get to it I would think. If it's in the garbage then they are stating they don't want it.

We moved building a while ago and threw away tons of rolling office chairs, work tables, etc. I made a few trips with tables, chairs, etc. Some guys got whole shelving units and other stuff too.

Dumpsters unlike city trash cans are private property and unlike city trash, dumpsters are stored on private property. So not only are you trespassing you are stealing from trash owner (either the store or the company that owns the dumpster). With your neighbors trash it is public property when put to the curb in a city trash can, but dumpters are private property.

...I still say from an ethical stand point, it's open season. I think most companies are worried about you diving for documents, not parts.

some guy filled his hatchback car full of trash outside my apartment. He had a long trash picker, it was weird.

Take some cardboard boxes with you, and if a cop asks you what you are doing, show him the cardboard and say you are moving, and you need to find boxes

dumpster diving rules
last summer the place i work for tossed out 3 or 4 server racks
i took one of the smaller ones home, but one of the big ones was a secure rack, had about 20 fans in it as well as a locking door

when i worked for MTX i scored tons of speakers and amps and boxes and other electronics when we did the bi-yearly housecleaning

Well most dumpsters never make it to the curb. Most around here have no unauthorized access signs and the like on them.

This thread is where I learned all my DDiving things from

It's awesome fun, and I'd say it's cool for you to say where/when OP

i used to know a lot of punk/vegan kids who dumpster dove all the time.
they never found anything good.
well, they considered it good. it was old food.
actually, i think once they found some beer but they were all sobered up by then and just smashed it on the ground. (irony!)

You don't get good stuff going to just random dumpsters. You have to go to industrial dumpsters that are usually locked with a padlock and such.
