alright, here's the situation... my grandfather needs a new computer. he NEEDS one. the one he has currently is a K6-400 with god knows how little RAM, and everything about it is crappy. it's hard drive is dying(he has a lot of information on that disk, we backed it up to CD, though, so it's backed up at least...) and on top of that, it's running XP home...

i was asked by my father, and my grandmother, to build him a new computer to present to him in 1 month's time, for his birthday...

his computer is dying. he NEEDS a new one...

alright, now to the question. while at their house, my father and grandmother asked me to build a new computer for my grandfather. i had just recently built a harder computer to put together, and the main focus of this computer would be stability, not speed... so i already know what i would do. it would have a good amount of power, and be a worthy computer to write in word, and maybe someday surf the net...

alright, question time.. the computer he has now came from my uncle. he's been taking care of my grandfather computer-wise since the mid 80's. however, the computers he gives him are always POS junkers that were his old ones... would it be wrong of me to take over this field, and give my grandfather a much better computer (my father's budget, i'd keep it under 300 by recycling components, using nforce mobo, XP1700+... this is to give a stable yet cheap computer. and i'd either load win98lite, or XP pro. not sure which.

prior to this POS computer that he has now, he was running DOS....

oh, questions, questions... would it be right or wrong of me to fill a niche that my uncle has been filling for my grandfather for 15 years? or should i lay off, and let his computer fail and he be stuck till a "new" one comes from my uncle?

oh, and cost and tech support are no issue to me... my grandmother makes the best meals, i dont mind driving 4 hours and doing a little tech work for her dinner :D

Build it for him. Why should you worry about the 'scraps' your uncle is giving him. If he takes offense to it, it is his problem.

My $.02

I'd NEVER build a computer for any family members - I don't do tech support.

this wasnt really a problem for me till my father brought it to my attention. it still isnt really a problem for *me*, really... more for my father, who would be footing the bill... i'm kind of just looking for reasons why i should convince my father of this... my grandmother did ask me to do it..........

Can you talk to your uncle?

Instead of explaining it in terms of "your old PCs sux0r!", explain it as something you want to do for your grampa, and that you also want the excuse to go there more often for the good food :) . If you get his OK there should be no hurt feelings.

I agree. It's a nice gesture for his birthday and it sounds like you would be doing him a big favor anyway if your uncle is that bad at building a decent computer.
