Long story short, rumors fly, and I try to confirm or deny them, but I refuse to also spread the names of the sources.

hmm not sure what ethics say but I would avoid anything that could be considered a rumor.

Well, the rumor is two years old.. the cat is out of the bag.. and I am 99% sure it's true unless there is some vast conspiracy is happening.

If it's true, then you did the right thing. But you don't know that, so it's debatable.

Want me to vote for something?

Even if you're good friends with someone in a relationship and think you're doing them a favor by telling them something about their bf/gf, if they don't want to know it or believe it they will be in denial and think you are a "bad guy" for telling them about it. Same thing for when two people break up. Don't start saying right away what a louse you think the other person was because then if/when they get back together you will no longer be considered such a good friend as far as the relationship goes.

If you know for a fact it is true, then you did the right thing. You shouldn't protect the guilty, and you shouldn't put a bad name on the innocent. If you're not sure, it's usually best to not get involved because it might do more harm than good.
