he paid for it already, but made a thread like he hadn't

I already know what I'm going to do is in there, isn't it? Your reading comprehension sucks, I'd love to take a gander at your SAT scores.

You said you already knew what you were going to do. You never said what though. One might assume from this thread that you were going to either screw the company or pay for the product they shipped you. Seems to me like you were just tap dancing around the issue trying to get advice without actually commiting to either. I think Mosh was right on with her assessment.

Of course you pay for it, it's just the right thing to do.

I had the opposite situation once. I made a credit card purchase at a bike shop that came to around $479. When I got my statement it showed a debit and then credit for $4790, then my debit for $479. Turns out the bike shop had accidentally keyed in $4790 and the credit card company thought that seemed an abnormally large one time purchase for me and called and checked on it and got it all straightened out with the bike shop without my even knowing about it until I got my statement. Thing I never understood though was that my receipt from the bike shop said $479. 😕

Your friend is an idiot. You could buy a laptop for less with far more processing power.

People carry those things around my office all the time...wow, I can get my email in the mens room and constantly be interupted in the middle of important meetings whenever the secretary sends out the latest company phone list or traffic update. Are you really that goddamned important?

That was my first thought, but found it hard to believe because they are a very reputable Mom and Pop place that's been there for over 60 years. I went back later and they recognized me and brought it up and apologized. Said the boy had keyed it in wrong and realized what he had done and then keyed it in correctly without taking the first charge off correctly.

that's good. imagine if nobody noticed for a few months.

Actually, the company does have recourse. They have proof that you accepted delivery of the item, and proof that you ordered it with a card that you cancelled sometime between order and shipment. They could haul your ass through a valid collection action, and do some serious credit damage, etc. Possibly even get a judgement if they decided to go through the trouble. Maybe even attempt to file fraud charges with your local police. I'm just saying this to clear up any confusion for those who voted Option 2. Good to see you're gonna do the right thing.
