ethernet to ethernet in XP

Yes - as a matter of fact, I just got through doing it. If you don't have an established LAN, it is possible using crossover cables. It can also be done via USB or Firewire.

And, there is always the "sneaker net." FLash memory or external drives that can be moved PC to PC.

can you explain to me exactly how or point me to a resource for the ethernet one using rj45 cable?

What I would do is bop down to Office Depot and buy a Cat5 crossover cable of a suitable length for the job.

I am assuming that each computer has a NIC installed. This Microsoft KB article is as good as any for the procedure:

If you can't find a crossover cable, I believe all you have to do is cross the middle lines. There are guides out there if you need more elaboration.

If all else fails, I'm pretty sure you can network with USB/firewire. Not too sure on how easy it is to set up though.
