Ethernet Surge Protection

I recently started running my ethernet cable through a surge protector (Belkin 800VA UPS). The wires are installed correctly in/out. Anyway, I have noticed a little more lag with the internet. Is this possible?

The surge equipment should only do it's thing when "clamping" is needed.
