Ethernet says cable unplugged on A8N-SLI Help?

I just installed win xp pro and the drivers from the asus cd for the ethernet and chip set. My computer sees the ethernet ports, but says the cable isn't plugged in (it Is!) I have unplugged my cable modem and router to clear them but it still doesn't work. I have not installed any service packs (this is the original xp cd I got from their training) so windows warned me that the drivers for the chip set were not approved, I installed them anyway. Any ideas?

I just had to RMA my A8N with a similar problem. Only in my case the driver would not install at all. The device was seen in device manager but each time I tried to install a driver I recieved a message "There was a problem installing your driver: This device may not work properly" same exact thing for the 1394 device as well. After working with 2 different ASUS techs for about an hour and a half they recommended an RMA. I just bit the bullet and went for a new board.

I doubt you have the same problem as I did but I thought I should mention it. Have you called ASUS technical support yet?

No, I'll call them tomarrow. I hope I don't have to RMA. It doesn't seem like that type of problem.

kind of obvious but have you tried another cable?

i use my own wired cables sometimes and wires have broken free from my surface jacks and ill get the same error. i have had to go back and tigthen the wire screws or rewire for it to come back.

also kind of crappy but if you got a pci nic card laying around and dont want to RMA the board thats always an option.

I just posted this on the Networking thread about my board doing the same thing:

I brought my brand new, first build, computer to a friend's house to try to swap some files over and perhaps get some games in after linking them together...but it didn't turn out so well. I'm thinking it is a problem with my computer, as a different friend was able to link up and share files just fine. But now on to the problem:

First, at home, I got my broadband internet to work with the ethernet ports, so I was happy. Then I went to connect up with some friends and brought my Linksys router since we didn't have any null-modem/cross-over/whatever cables, just regular ethernet cables. When I plugged the cables into my ethernet ports it would detect it just fine and tell me whether or not the other one was empty and so on. However, when I went to "My network places" it showed absolutely nothing of my friend's computer. I tried setting up a network on my computer, even using a Windows XP cd to set it up for the other computer at the same time, but it had no effect. At the point where you select which ethernet program/driver/hardware you are going to use, I would hit next and it kept saying something to the effect of "There is still some hardware missing. Please make sure all hardware is connected and try again, or check the 'Ignore missing hardware' box." I'm pretty sure these ports are just ON the motherboard though, don't need an ethernet/network card, right? I loaded all the drivers from the CD that I got with my ASUS mobo, but it comes up with the same problem no matter what I do.

Again, I don't think the router or cables were bad, since another friend was able to hook up and could see everything just fine without setting up any networks or anything. I'm very confused and can't find anywhere that explains this error message (sorry I can't remember it exactly, couldn't log on at friend's house because I don't have a dial-up modem in my comp ;p).

Thanks for any help,
Aipon

I also had trouble with installing the drivers in the first place. It would go through all the ethernet setup and other connection setups, but then it got to installing the nvidia Network Manager thing and it would just lock up after a certain point. I had to ctrl-alt-del end task out of it each time, and that had the added bonus of making it so my comp couldn't restart properly (had to hit the case reset button). At the friend's house I tried it again though and it did finally get through the entire install and setup, but I still had the same problem of it acknowledging a connection, and then telling me I was missing hardware.

As I said in my other post though, I got my broadband internet to work through those ports just fine (although it did take me a while to figure it out but I think that was just because of the internet setup process, not the mobo. I only say this because it took me just as long when I switched the connection once before to a different computer just a couple weeks ago)

Thanks again,
Aipon

well any computer shouldnt have trouble installing the drivers like you mentioned. That right there sounds like a red flag of something wrong with the hardware.

This is also my first build, so I may have done things wrong from the start....Wasn't really sure what order to do everything, if order even matters.

I hooked it up, plugged it in and it came up with the BIOS (first try, that was so cool :) )

Then I installed Windows XP Pro SP1, during which it formatted my harddrive.

Next...I think I spent a half hour to an hour setting up the broadband internet (worked great once I figured it out)

Then I popped in the CD that came with the mobo and started installing things. I think a trial version of Norton 2005 was on there, looked through all the options and just installed drivers as I saw them. Installed a couple of the monitoring programs that came with the mobo. (This is when I first had trouble with the nvidia chipset driver installation)

After that I just messed around with Windows settings trying to get it to not look all cartoony and childish (I prefer classic style to XP style ;p)

Hmm...then I think I popped in the video card CD (6600gt pci-e) and installed some drivers.

Installed some media things that came with some hardware or another...checked my case headphone connector to see if I hooked it up right (I didn't, had to go switch a couple wires)...played some music, messed with the onboard audio programs and stuff, popped in a DVD to see if that worked

Yeah, the list goes on...but those were the first things I did. I was just winging it, since no manuals have nice step-by-step directions.

Thats what mine is doing. I'm about ready to just try a pci ethernet.

I had a similar problem. I finally got mine to work, by using the marvel lan jack, and downloading and installing the Marvel Yukon drivers from the Asus download page.

I originally wanted to use the nVidia lan jack, but found there were no drivers yet for SP2 which I have loaded. I have since read a review at HardOC comparing the performance of the two lan ports, and the Marvel wins the performance tests and has less CPU overhead

Could also be the NV Active Armour or Windoze firewall. Try disabling anyof these if you have them running or installed.

I tried both jacks when I was there, but the drivers I loaded were off of the CD that came with the motherboard. Should I remove both of those and get just the Marvel driver from the website? Or should the driver from the cd work...

I also tried messing with all the firewalls but it still had the same problem *shrug*

Word. If the NIC can't talk to the router to get an IP address using DHCP, you're not going anywhere. If you manually set your IP address to something that matches the router's IP addressing setup on the LAN side, such as 192.168.1.105 subnet 255.255.255.0 for a typical home router using its default settings, and it begins to work, then you know what was causing it. Try opening the TCP ports 67 and 68 if you don't want to use static IP addressing, so the NIC can talk DHCP with the router.

Not sure exactly what you're saying, but it did have all the IP addresses. I even had it repair them several times and it worked every time. [EDIT]: The repair worked, not the networking.

This isn't my thread...but it's the same problem, so I'll give an update here.

Called my uncle to see if he could help me get it set up and working. We went through a bunch of different things and finally I got both the network and internet working going through a router. Kept the computers on and went to eat dinner only to come back and find that the networking was still working (I can see my computer and the other computer in "My Network Places"), but the internet is no longer working on my machine (although it is working on the other machine).

Update as I was writing this: I tried repairing the connection, but it hanged while doing that. I tried the other port, but now it hangs while "Acquiring network address" and stops responding when I go into "My Network Places." When I close the window all my icons and the taskbar disappear then pop back up and half the icons in the taskbar disappeared (Norton and nVidia driver thing).

Any ideas? At this point should I just RMA the board, or is it still probably something I can fix... I haven't even bothered calling tech support, maybe I should try that next? I really don't know what's going on anymore....

[EDIT]: Update again: Restarted computer, network works again, but internet still is saying "Page cannot be found"

BUMP.

Ok, I'll try this: Does anyone know where else I can go to get help, since nobody else seems to have any ideas on what to do?

The drivers off the CD didn't work for me. The ones off the website did.

*sigh* Read it again, bro. MANUALLY set your IP address and subnet mask, or open ports 67 and 68 so the NIC can renew its IP address lease from the router when it expires, and see if that helps.

Nope, it just seems to work and not work randomlly...right now I am back at school and the internet is working just fine after reinstalling the drivers and then doing an online autoupdate for the drivers, guess we'll see how long that holds out, heh.

Just to double check, could someone give me a link to the latest marvell yukon ethernet driver? I just went the A8N-SLI Deluxe section of the ASUS site and got that one, even though it has the same date and driver version number as the one on the CD that came with my motherboard.

Thank you all again,
Aipon

I did not manually set them, it just started working after reinstalling the drivers. I am still afraid of restarting my computer though...it might not last through that, heh.

Thanks for everyone's help though, I don't really know what I did but it seems to be working so far.

I think I am having the same problem. I built two exact systems and have been running them for about a week now. I can home this afternoon and one comp could not connect to the internet. XP just keep saying limited or no connection or was trying to connect.

After reading this post I manually set the ip and it said connected. But still there was no internet. I tried opening ports 67 and 68 as well in my Linksys router in "port forwarding"? I don't know if that was the correct place to open the ports or not but I still could not get the internet.

Now I just reset the Yukon port to DHCP and I have internet again. Thanks for the help but how did this come about? And why would this happen on one comp and not the other? The only things I have installed is Mozzilla and Daoc (mmog) on each machine.

thanks

qmpirate,

Next time you have no internet see if you can bring up to your router's web interface (it is probably 192.168.0.1). If you can connect to it then your problem is with your isp and not your hardware.

I don't understand how the problem could be with my isp. It had been working fine for 1 1/2 weeks.

I have six comps in my house and only one cannot get internet and I have two of this one comp exactly the same.

The one that was not getting internet is connected to the same switch as two others that were getting internet.

I switched cables between the three comps connected to the same switch and still the one could not connect. Switching ports on the switch did not change anything either.

I did as MechBgon said and then switched back to DHCP and everything was fine. Obviously I am happy now but am uncomfortable not knowing how this happened.

thanks
