Ethernet port dies on Mobo?

On the internet earlier today, and come back after dinner to see no 'link' light on my modem. Nothing changed; neither hardware or software.

Thought it was just Time Warner's crappy service and it would come back on, but after an hour I started trying things. Replaced the cable, rebooted the modem, and finally tried my second Ethernet port on my motherboard... fixed.

Not in twenty years have I seen any Ethernet or network port go bad, from my first 2600 baud modem to my current cable modem, but that appears to be the case.

Just wanted some input from any network gurus here... this something you have ever seen happen? Perhaps just a physical issue with my motherboard, or could there be a logical software based reason?

like VL said...shit happens. NICs are cheap enough to just get one and move on. Do a little trouble shooting if you can, like hook up the port to a switch and see if link light comes back.

Also to note.
I have also had 2 MB that the NICs went out, Come to find out the power supplies got weak over time and dropped the voltage just enough on the rail that the NIC couldnt comunicate correctly.
The MB tolerance were just to picky (Also could hear it in the audio durring peek beats)
Both MBs and powersupplies still in use to this day just not together.
