I want to setup a wired network. and my house has ethernet ports. but i dont think they work. or i dont know what i am doing.

i plug a regular cat 5 cable in one room. then i plug another cable in other room and hook it up to the router. but the sucker doesnt light up. what am i doing wrong. or is this port not active?

thanks

How do you know the jack in 1st room goes to the 2nd?
You probably need a cable tester or toner to trace out all the jacks in your house.

in house jacks aren't usually wired and terminated to another room. They're almost always terminated in a wiring closet in either the attic, basement or a closet on the same level. You need to find out where that is and put your router in that room.

kevnich2 is correct ... I would personally start looking in the area where your Telephone, Electric
and Cable TV enter the home .. usually in your Garage or Basement .. you should find all
the cables down there ... then you just need to know which one goes to which room in
case you need to troubleshoot it.
