Ethernet cable connections

I am running Windows 2000 on my laptop and my desktop. I am trying to connect these two machines with an network cable alone such that I can see both machines on Windows Explorer. Any suggestions?

Plug a cross over cable into the machines and begin?

I have heard of crossover cables (vs patch cables) but how would you actually set that up? do u need any special hardware or software? anyone have any tutorials? thanks for the reply

Plug the rj45 connector on one end of the cross over cable into pc1. Plug the other end into pc2. uhhh have a :beer:
