I assume this will be the "entry-level" X2 with 1MB cache per core? What's the ETA?

If so, I want one!

As mentioned somewhere before by someone, it would be professional suicide for AMD to put out a chip like that. No one would even bother buying the 4400+ then. ;)

Yeah, seems unlikely we'll see a 4000+ Toledo core.

That said, a sub-$350 3800+ Manchester would be quite nice.

The X2 3800+(Manchester) was mentioned in one publishing to be released Aug. 1st but there have been some reports that it has already been released. The X2 4000+(Toledo), I would assume would be released a few weeks afterwards.

AMD to double up on cheaper dual-core chips?

Why wouldn't AMD offer a X2 4000+? If it's priced properly, it would be no different than current AMD offerings, ie. X2 4200+/X2 3800+, A64 3200+/A64 3000+, etc...

The X2 3800+ manchester has already been pictured and listed in the distribution channel, with the 4000+ rumored to follow within a few weeks

question is then...

why doesn't amd release a 2.0 ghz 1 meg L2 single core chip and list it as a 3500+?

that'd be a sweet chip (since i game and don't hardcore multitask)

Ofcourse its guys like you who are easily convinced of such "wisdoms", considering you can't see anyone in the world who woudl be "stupid" enough to buy the 4400+.

There ARE people who do not overclock, including many people on these forums.

We're a minority, us overclockers, it would be very possible for AMD to release such a CPU however it is somewhat unlikely. They stopped 1MB L2 cached A64s @ 2.2GHz, so it doesn't seem like they'd do the same for the X2s, but you never know with dual core only going up to 2.4GHz at the moment.

Again by your logic noone would buy the 4800+ because there is the 4400+...of which the price difference between those two is far more gihugant than a price difference between the 4400+ and supposed 4000+

Considering that they can't seem to make enough X2s to fill demand, I am pretty sure they could find someone still willing to buy the 4400+ if they introduced this model. Remember folks, regular people don't overclock.

The topic of the 4000+ has been discussed before... and lets put it to rest right now. There is NO 4000+ X2 until AMD says there will or won't be. With the 4400+ still selling much better than any of the X2s, I believe that AMD is trying to push the 512k chips out the door, and we WON'T see a 4000+ X2 till maybe the end of the year, if EVER. Like it was said above, you had to hit the 3700+ with the new 90nm chips before you get to the 1mb cache. Then you have the 3000+, 3200+ and 3500+ all with 512k... so why oh why would they need to even release a 4000+ with 1mb cache? The larger cache means more expense to AMD, especially when the more expensive chip is going out the door like mad... makes no sense to release it... keep the 1mb for the higher end, more expensive chips, that are still selling...

It only makes sense if AMD is building up an inventory of 1MB cache chips that won't hit 4800+ or 4400+ speeds. AFAIK, Toledo and Manchester are physically different chips, not the same chip with one having some cache disabled.
