I received an email yesterday that was an invite to an info session next month about the Eta Kappa Nu chapter at our university (Michigan Tech).

"HKN is a prestigious student organization for electrical and computer engineers."

I've never heard of it before, but Wikipedia had a page for it. I'm not sure what exactly being a member entails. Obviously I'd need to goto that session to get all the details, but I'm curious if anyone here is a member since it's nation-wide. The wiki page said something like the top 28% of juniors and 33% of seniors in EE and CpE are eligble. I'm eligible and basically l33t as ***. Anyway, the email was sent to 89 people, so it's not highly selective or anything (recent statistics show a total of 345 current juniors and seniors in EE/CpE), but not bad.

Anyone know what sort of things are offered by being a member, and more importantly is it helpful on a resume?

Though I am doubtful about it since back at community college in my first year, I was invited to Phi Theta Kappa honor society. So I did all that stuff, paid $50, got accepted at the ceremony blah blah. I thought it might do some good, and more importantly being a member, a lot of colleges offered $500+ scholarships per semester. So I figured for $50, even if no other benefits, it'd pay for itself my first semester at a university. Turns out, the university I go to is one of the very few in Michigan that doesn't do anything for Ptk members. Bah! So yeah... that seems pretty worthless to me now... I think I only had it on my resume a few years ago when I had very little else to put on there.

Besides, it lets me add another logo :p

How do you dedicate so much time to so many Greek societies? I find that impossible... or you're just oen of those people I know that pledge and leave. I honestly hate that.

I was inducted at my undergraduate university as a senior. I think you had to have senior standing to join, plus be in the top x% of the class. Once we joined, that was the last we ever heard of the organization. We got a nice certificate and that was it.

Once I started grad school, I noticed their HKN branch was much more active. They hold meetings, host companies to give talks about upcoming products, and raise money to support social events. They also have a special resume CD that gets handed out to companies before the career fairs. Also I don't think you need senior standing to join.

I guess the purpose of the organization will vary depending on the school.

I was invited to HKN at UofM, but never joined. It's basically something to put on your resume. They also ran the snack stand in the EECS building too and did some volunteer work.

Hmmm.. I'm undecided. Suppose it's no harm in going to the info session to learn more about the chapter. Thanks for the comments

I'm ME so I'm in Pi Tau Sigma (the ME equivalent to HKN). I'm also in Tau Beta Pi, the all engineering honors society.

I'd join it, assuming your chapter isn't a bunch of deadbeats. You meet a lot of contacts, get to know people, get hook-ups to people in industry, that sort of thing. Some of them also have test databases so you can get inside help with tests.

I'm a lazy bum and if it weren't for the engineering groups I'm in, I'd know nothing about what to do after college.
