ET: QuakeWars is still going strong (enough)

I just reinstalled ETQW and much to my surprise, it still works and there are active servers to play on. IMO old age, and humble opinion this is the game that COD and BF wish they could be.

Only thing I had to do special to get on some servers without issue was this http://forums.warchest.com/showthre...er-Legacy-Files-Including-Quake-Wars-question

If you're a big fan of this not so old game, reinstall, there are a few good servers out there even now.

I liked it a lot, and would like an updated version.

I asked one of the presenters at this past QuakeCon if they were working on QW2, he seemed to acknowledge me in a way that said yes. He couldn't answer questions directly though about upcoming games.

Just for an example of the servers available right at this moment, there aren't a lot that don't have at least -some- bots on them. But for ones with 0 bots there's 107.170.42.25:27733 showing up in the in-game browser with 21/24 players, 173.75.143.198:27733 with 8/24 and 62.104.17.161:27733 with 2/24 right now.

Not bad IMO considering this game is 7 years old and didn't last much longer than a year with 'mass' popularity. My filter settings are for servers that aren't empty and have 0 bots, there's always something available.

I've heard nothing but bad things about BF4 regarding it being buggy. QW was never buggy.

I was just thinking about QW the other day, and how fun that game was... maybe I'll fire it back up..

Ya they even had a rerelease in Korea at one point as a F2P http://www.dragonflygame.com/eng/Games/Online_Service.aspx

I don't know if the Quake universe simply doesn't appeal to younger generations or what, but it seems to have failed a few times. Maybe you got to be killing Chinese people, or Arabs to sell to kids today (or that's simply all they're being offered, old fashioned 'frags' on aliens/demons are so 90's). I prefer it over other settings, esp COD/BF. Not to mention it's a more polished and less buggy game.

If we could get another QuakeWars or Unreal Tournament 2004 I'd be a happy gamer. I don't see anything like those on the way though.

It was a fantastic game. I think I got a couple extra copies from NV card purchases (8800-GTX 260 IIRC) that I gave to a few friends. Had a blast playing Q:ET.

The first thing that killed ETQW was a horrible console version. The vast majority of new video game players play on a console, and word of mouth spread fast that it 'sucked'. I'm sure PC players may have read rants about it, and assumed they were talking about the PC version.

A few design decisions like Flyer Drones put the nails in the coffin though. Nothing made a new player rage quit and uninstall like being constantly killed by tiny flying drones. I admit to highly overusing them; great fun for me, not so much for my targets.

I played in the alpha and beta, and loved it, but it didn't hold me like ET did. Loved playing in the beta... by that time it was all multiple year ET vets playing, and the stress tests and big games were some of the best multiplayer matches I ever played in any game.

Too bad Splash Damage hasn't had any great success since ET. Maybe they should make a WW2 shooter?

:p Interesting viewpoint. I never paid any attention to the console versions at all, I simply played the demo and got hooked. I'm always hoping for more variety and less WW2 shooters.

The only game on the radar I'm looking forward to now is Evolve. The rest of the WW2 - "modern" shooters can suck an egg.

Also, I'm Titanfall-curious. I think it's overhyped and not going to be that great, but maybe it is. I'm certainly open to the idea of that game. We'll see in 8 days..
