estimates on possible OC?

my buddy wants me to OC his comp for him

he bought this computer in august

abit 865 v 1.0
2.6C
gig of mushkin 4000

will the older 2.6C and the version 1.0 board hold him back?

any estimates?

Yeah, I've heard the same. An older P4 like that should overclock pretty well, although the MB might hold it back a little being 865. In general, Intel builds quite a bit of headroom into their processors, so you should at least be able to hit 2.8 with stock voltage and cooler. Any more than that and you just have to try it. It all depends on that particular chip...

You might be able to hit 3.0-3.2. Any higher would be a bonus. The Abit 865 board (IS7?) is a pretty good board. It only suffers from lower memory bandwidth which is only noticeable in benchmarks and doubt that you could tell the difference in real world apps.
