Essential protection software for new system?

I'll be building my new system on Friday, but I'm ashamed to admit I haven't really kept up on spyware blockers / dectectors and anti-virus software like I should have lately. So I'd appreciate some suggestions - what do you consider essential protection software for XP based systems? Preferably low maintenance freeware. I'm lazy. 😉
