The Android version of this thread recurs every few months, but I don't remember WP7/7.5. So... any suggestions?

(Still can't believe there's no Dropbox app.)

Really? No suggestions?

This doesn't really bode well for MS. Guess they're lucky they're getting money from Android. ;)

The essential app is Mango...so much is built into the OS, it eliminates the need for a lot of commonly used stuff (Facebook, Twitter, Shazaam, Evernote, etc)....

Anyway, scrolling through my app list....

4th & Mayor - way better Foursquare app than the official one
Amazon Kindle / Amazon.com / AmazonFresh / IMDb - the usual Amazon suite
AppFlow / AppTracker - awesomely useful apps for developers
Board Express - the WP7 version of Tapatalk
ESPN ScoreCenter - self explanatory
Key Ring - same as on other platforms, stores your reward cards
OneBusAway - bus tracking app
Spotify - I mention it because its popular and I do have it on my phone, but I never use it, as I have a Zune Pass
Tango - video chatting app
WhatsApp - SMS / group chat replacement, cross platform
YouTube (by LazyWorm) - much better than the default YouTube app
DeekFit Gym - the developer is just so sexy!
Shamrock Shake Finder - see above!

I agree with the above list. Since Mango is so much better and I got tired of downloading and managing buttloads of apps, I just keep it simple.
The Amazon stuff, Netflix (even though it looks awful on 3G), Board Express, and a couple games is all I need. The included weather, maps (now with navigation), email, and everything is else is more than good enough for me.

Is Pulse on WP7?

The weather channel app is pretty good... hate the app ui but the live tile is awesome (flips over and gives you the live weather map)
Fox News also has a good implementation of the live tile as well (best of the big news services apps on wp7)

Most everything else is covered by the native support of the popular services (office, zunepass, facebook, twitter, etc)

The games are a different story... have alot of those installed.... most games have demo's which helps you decide if the game is worth your $.
Wordament (worldwide mutliplayer scrabble game... also free which is nice)
Wheel of Wealth (free multiplayer wheel of fortune game)
Tapitude (free game that has a bunch of minigames)
Minesweeper/Soduku

these all cost money but are excellent:
Fusion Sentient (has really cool wp7-xbla integration)
Hydro Thunder Go
ilomilo
Tentacles

Just about everything I need is built into the OS. I like the Amazon app because I buy stuff from Amazon almost every day. And I like the MSN Movies app for previews, showtimes and buying tickets. And the weather channel app for the live tile when I wake up in the morning.

The essential Mango app should be Navigation to take you to a store to buy a real phone :p

Don't thread-crap, this is your warning

i was worried about this as well, but after reading that there wassnt much need for a ton of apps due to the OS having is covered, im a bit more open. still wish vzw would get some different phones to try out.

IMHO WP7 needs a video playing app that let's you bypass the annoying Zune software. Also I do hope there is now a good chat client. I only tried it before Mango was released, and back then there was only one I recognized (IM+) and it didn't work very well.

FB chat is built in now, Windows Live Messenger too.

And the Zune software is the most amazing thing since... I don't know. But I love it.

What about Google Talk? That was the one I needed most.

I really don't like the Zune software because the one and only thing I ever need to manually dump on my phone is video files, and having to convert them is a real pain and waste of time when Android and iOS have apps that let you drag, drop, and play.

Unfortunately, Google Talk is not built in and integrated nicely like WLM and Facebook, however, there are a couple of apps out there that do the job. The multiplatform IM+ is available, but just for Google Talk, I prefer the app GChat.

Zune software is nice. But I get tired of managing two libraries in different software. Hoping MM4 will support WP7 eventually.

My essential apps on WP7

Mango Transit
Network Dashboard
Thumba Photo Editor
Some RSS reader I don't renember tthe name of.
And amazon apps mentioned above
3rd party Dropbox app

We still need an app that lets you quickly change the most important settings.
Ideally a wide live tile that tells you whats on and off and such.

We have some apps that create shortcuts to the menus for each of the important things (enable disable wifi, blutooth, 3g) but thats not really what I want.

Geo Defense is the best tower defense game on WP7 IMO. I actually felt compelled to get all the achievements.

Google Talk is their IM service, just uses Jabber. Works from within the Gmail web interface, or in IM clients.

I would still like a slick Dropbox client, but that's about it (well, allow developers to integrate the other IM protocols into the Messaging hub).

That game has been pissing me off lol. It seems like the one constant in tower defense games (the closest enemy to the turret is targeted) isn't in effect. Sometimes the last line of defense turrets are busy targeting elsewhere :|

Okay, so an update.

I like Carbon as a full Twitter client. JiTalk is a very nice GTalk client, blows Gchat out of the water. Should be releasing soon, they are on RC2, and tbh, the beta was release worthy imo.

Otherwise a few apps here and there, Amazon, eBay, MSN Movies, Dictionary.com, and Key Ring are handy. Thumba Photo Editor is fantastic. I also have WHS Phone and RemoteDesktop apps.

Homebrew wise I use Battery Status, Screen Capturer, and Folders.

And Facebook changed something on the backend, so people who had all platform apps blocked on their accounts now show up in People Hub (or link with their corresponding Google/Live contacts). This also affects Android as well.

Yeah this really bothers me at times. If they made the integration an official Facebook app and have the ability to like and delete posts, there would be no reason to use the mobile website or FB app. Hopefully Apollo fixes this.

I just want it (GTalk) integrated into the Messaging hub like MSN or Facebook. Those both work very well, much better than any 3rd party app. Now that I have turn-by-turn with my Lumia, its really the only thing I really miss from other platforms.

Hopefully they integrate it, throw AIM and Y! in there as well. Once you start the idea MS, you have to finish it! It makes popping out to a separate "app" so dated and annoying!

Anyways, JiTalk is fast and works, last time I used Gchat there were no avatars, and stability blew, would crash out every couple minutes. No problems with JT so far. I'll update this thread when it hits the Marketplace.

edit: how is the turn by turn with Nokia Drive vs Google Nav?
