Essay Length

So I had to write an essay that went along with the topic of "Why reconstruction failed and if I agreed or Dissagreed with either of the two others in one of my books."

My question is this, my essay seems to answer the question to me, but its only about 2 pages long, do you think its to short, its seems to answer the question and I hate to fill it with crap making it obvious as to what I am doing?

Thoughts?

Pos the essay. 🙂

After reading the other thread about the guy that posted his essay I would rather not, not saying I don't trust the good people of AT I just don't want to have it up, nor deal with putting it up right now.

Anyone just have an opinion about the question?

Depends entirely on the teacher/situation. If the assignment was for a 5 page paper, then you should probably shoot for a 5 page paper. Then again, filler and fluff doesn't increase your grade one bit. Some profs don't care about length, others are compensating. I almost always figure I should be with 1 page either way of the requirement (if there is one). When there isn't one, I make it as concise as possible - which for me usually means about 10 pages. 😉

Whenever I had my students do essays I always told them that I would stop reading at the end of page five. Anybody can take a few pages and fluff it up to 10, its is harder to take 10 pages and trim it down to 5.

The topic of the essay interests me though since your teacher seemed to have already decided on the success or failure of reconstruction when many historians would have considered it a success.

If you wrote a two page essay then you really couldnt have used sources to support your argument. Tell me them, what grade/class are you in. Not to flame you, but to see about what level that you should shooting for here.

I would probably lengthen it to 4-5 pages. Are you saying that it's 2 pages double spaced, 12 font Times New Roman?

its around 3 pages double spaced, 12 font, the class is history 202 Colonial Times and Revolutions, the topic is whether reconstruction was a sucess or failure, using sources from two authors in the book. The articles written by the authors are around 6 pages total, the essay had no minimum length.

What level class is it? Without seeing the paper or your research, 2 pages seems pretty inadequate. When you write you want to be concise, but not at the expense of content.
