Essay prompt:

Choose a distinguished novel or play in which some of the most significant events are mental or psychological; for example, awakenings, discoveries, changes in consciousness. In a well-organized essay, describe how the author manages to give these internal events the sense of excitement, suspense, and climax usually associated with external action. Avoid plot summary.

Would it be ok if i wrote about how a main character in this play uses evasion as sort of a "drug" to get away from his problems, then after taking too much of his "drug" he comes to his awakening that his life is pretty much a failior and that leads him to suicide?

Sounds to me like that's within the parameters of what the instructor is looking for. However, since the subject matter is negative, you'll have to work a bit harder to pull it off, I think. You'll have to build a case that the realizations that lead to the suicide were in fact an awakening, discovery, or change of consciousness, and then explain how this builds excitement and/or supsense in the character's "external action".

Depending on the novel/play, if you do pull it off, you can probably put together a really nice essay. When I was in English/Literature classes, I always liked to do things slightly different from what everyone else does; I never liked writing the same essays that hundreds or thousands of other students also wrote.

yes that would appear to fall within the assignment paramenters. I don't htink it will be any more difficutl than if you chose a play that was about a more positive action.
