As a general rule of thumb, generic ink is fine for text and things to don't require amazing quality. For printing high-quality photos and material for presentations, you are not going to get manufacturer quality without buying their ink.

Now, getting down to the comparison of off-brands can be quite difficult. I usually go by the ones with the highest ratings with a high level of feedback, even if it costs a dollar or two more.
