Ah I see.
I know it's not supposed to be real but they are sort of halfheartedly proposing a bracketed tourney system.
This proposal may make a little more sense, but still pretty dumb. Listed under "Lead Item"
The only thing I don't get is this.....weeks 4 and 5 are supposed to be cupcakes. So you match up say Oklahoma against Wyoming or something like that. But OU is not a cupcake for Wyoming, so they get shafted by having only 1 game to schedule a cupcake. And you know that it probably wouldn't happen as another top 25 team would want to play them in the 5th week. Or is the cupcake thing only apply to the good teams?
The solution I would support would be this: Cut back the season by 1 game and use some form of the BCS (the current or a modified version) to determine the top 8 teams in the nation. Then all of the games except for the title game can be played in the couple of weeks before the bowls. Then place the teams in the final round into the national championship game, and the other 6 teams into the other major bowls.
However, one issue I see is that every other division (I-AA, II, and III) already have a tournament and thus have some sort of criteria for selecting the teams that get the chance to play in the tournament. Why not just use that same criteria? I haven't really ever heard complaints from I-AA, II, or III schools about the tournament selection process, so why not make it a standard for all NCAA football postseasons?
This also got me thinking about another pretty cool thing that the NCAA could do. After the national champions for each division have been determined, hold 2 extra games matching these 4 teams up in a small tournament to come up with some sort of overall champion. I think it would be interesting to see how the best team in each division match up with each other.
