ESPN NBA 2k5 - anybody got this game?

fs5

Lifer
This is the same message I posted on espnvideogames.com boards:

I've been playing the 2k series since nba 2k and this has got to be runner up for the WORST NBA 2k right behind 2k3. I just picked this up over the weekend and already it's painfully obvious why it's $19.99 and release way to early.

Complaints:

1. Why do the player move by themselves? Especially DRIBBLE!!!! If you let go of the controller and the defender is crowding him, he'll start to DRIBBLE. This violates the fundamental rule of PLAYER CONTROL!

2. Why do all the players have a turn radius of a buick? I turn to face the basket with a center and he has to take a path all the way out to the 3pt line to do it? Evil or Very Mad

3. Did everybody forget how to dunk? I've got clear lanes to the basket and my player does a lay up? Come on..

4. Did they leave out some sound files on the master copy? A few sounds that appear to be missing (or at least way to muffled to be audible) are blocked shots, dunks, steals, and 3 point shots. Aren't these significant enough events? I'd like to know when I've blocked a shot or stolen with an audio trigger.

5. Why do all the players look like they've been in an oil wrestling match? They skin is way to shiny.

6. No players photographs on in game stats? Just a fake head that doesn't even look like them? Not to mention they look like retards, constantly moving their mouths.

IMO, 2k4 was the best 2k series (except for a few AI mistakes). I have no idea why VC released when just last year they had GOLD on their hands. For 2k6 dump the 2k5 code and revert back to 2k4 base. Exclamation

I got NHL2k5, and I'm not complaining for my $20 either. The only problem with NHL is the injuries bug that freezes your game. But hey, I'm not going to cry over it (like some espnvideogames.com forum posts) since there's workarounds. They did well with the NHL series... sorry to hear basketball sucks (well not really). 😉

I have NFL2k5 and Madden 2005.... Madden is so much better, even though it's 2x as much. I haven't really gotten into basketball games since Double Dribble on the NES, so I can't comment on those.

Yeah, Madden is better. I was playing at BestBuy the other night. one thing I hate about NFK 2K5 is crib points. That, and Carmen Electra keeps calling me... but all she wants to do is coach her foatball team. Why can't WE play football Carmen, WHY?

I wonder how College Hoops will be. I believe it's a different developer than the NBA series. Reviews on the CH so far have been positive (new one on IGN today).

I bought NFL 2K5 and it freaking rocks. Great game.

I also bought NBA 2K5 because my friend wanted to play me online. Bought it on sale for $14.99, and I'm glad I did. I've only played for about 15 minutes and it sucked the whole time. It just isn't a fun game. The controls seem to be delayed, the players heads spinning while their mouths are moving is freaky too. I think I'll end up trading it, or maybe ebay.

Price is no excuse for a crappy game. "We're only charging 1/2 so we'll only put in 1/2 the effort." That doesn't last very long...

NBA 2k4 was great, I don't know how they ended up with this 2k5 crap. 🙁

Hmmm
I have/had them all
I think that ESPN NFL 2k5 is better than Madden in overlal "feel" and game play... but madden wins hands down for playbooks. If ESPN would just have a more in depth playbook it would be nearly flawless.

As far as hoops are concerned, so far Im not impressed with ESPN or EA LIVE thus far. But then again Hoops is always better on a PC for some reason.

NHL... ESPN wins again. EA's was nice no question but, again the gameplay and feel of the ESPN version wins out.

** I dont play much of the CPU/franchise crap as it gets boring way too quickly so I cant comment on those aspects of the games. Its all about leagues and beating my buddies moreso than anything else.

I just want to meet the exorcist fan who said "yeah, the heads spinning while mouthing 'I LOVE SATAN' looks good. Lets go with it".

That's not my point. And it wasn't 1/2 the effort as far as NHL2k5 was concerned. It wasn't a huge upgrade, but you do notice some gameplay differences that are well worth the $20. Hell EASports has been doing these "upgrades" and charging $50 for it every year. People make too big a deal over things that can be dealt with by tweaking. As for your NBA concerns, they seem legit but that's what alternatives are for.

I was just reading an article about it.

Here it is. Scroll to the bottom. Apparently, the gameplay is more strategy based that arcade-like.

Last year was the first year I didn't buy the new basketball title by VC, including the dreamcast versions.

I have gotten destroyed the two times I have played online because Pedra Stoyakovich can't freaking miss!

I love the extra moves but it seems extremely hard to pull up for a 3 pointer. My jump stop always seems to be 5 feet after I click the button.

Not use to the camera angles yet. Went back to the up down version and then decided to just try too get use to the side viewing.

The free throw system sucks and the whole thing does feel more nbaish but still seems arcady to me.

I think NFL 2k5 is MUCH better than Madden. I used to be an EA whore, but none of the games i've played in recent years are better than the ESPN version.

I won't be buying NBA this year...or any future year for that matter. I might pick up the college one though.

i agree. i have always been an EA fan of Madden up until this year. ESPN NFL 2K5 just all around owns! Way more fun than madden IMO. as far as the ESPN NBA goes, I think ESPN NBA 2K4 was HORRIBLE! Live was like 100x better last year. I haven't played either this year because I m not a huge basketball game fan. but last year i think the 2k series was just horrible for basketball. I have heard from friends this year though that 2K5 owns.

A lot of people say that NFL 2K5 was very good and well worth the $20, but NHL and NBA certainly seemed to suffer from being only $20 and being released early. Fortunately for Sega, EA's NHL 2005 sucks even more. But EA's NBA Live will hopefully be good.

NBA Live seemed to be very similar to last years. Some more dunk animations were added. That's about all I've seen in the 2 or 3 games I've played. The Slam Dunk contest and 3-point shootout are pretty cool at first, but I found them pretty boring after an hour.

NBA Live still similar to last years??? You mean the gameplay is the same, I HOPE NOT. The Pro Hop was a joke, the collision detection sucked, there was no such thing as a jumpshot, and the offseason kinda sucked.

Last year, you could easily pro hop from outside the key into the lane for an easy layup or dunk at times. And then you would see the games other big problem, if you had a nice wide open layup/dunk the other team would finally collapse on you, and anytime you was bumped going up for the layup/dunk you missed the shot 99% of the time. It was so freaking annoying.

<--- Fan of all this year's $20 Sega games. Yeah, they have their problems, but honestly, not having to fork over $50 for a minor upgrade is fine by me. I have fun playing in my online leagues this year, no matter what the outcome. Heck, I'm 1-6 in my NFL league and I love every minute of it... except cheaters who exploit the DE glitch.

NFL > NHL > NBA

There are some serious coding issues with the NFL game. As in I go out of bounds, and the clock still runs! Lovely feature when you have no timeouts.....
Oh, and my first franchise team locks up when I go on offense causing a reboot. Week 15, season 2. So much for having a franchise for more than one year.....

No more sega based games for me, regardless of the price.

I've never had the game either lockup, or have the clock continue running when a player goes out of bounds.
