ESPN HD looks like ass!

Yep. Say hello to the HD of the future. Compressed for your displeasure.

DirecTV was the first to do this. I remember HD on DirecTV used to be so clear and free of compression artifacts that you thought it was a window. Those days are long gone.

Everyone compresses because of bandwidth concerns. The only uncompressed HD you get now is via OTA.

It is so bad on DirecTV that they turn off TNT HD during the day on Sundays because NFL Sunday Ticket HD is such a bandwidth hog.

DirecTV is supposed to be launching two new satellites in a few months to handle more bandwidth though. Plus everything will be moving to MPEG4. MPEG4 HD is about as close to OTA HD as I've seen.

It's bullshit. They know there's a national audience so bump up the friggin' bandwidth. Jeebus...

Is this a rumor, or actually happening?

Any dates or articles concerning this stuff?

How about Comcast? I just got an HD box today and I'm in the process of hooking it up. ESPN isn't working for me atm, though, so I can't see how ESPN looks 🙁.

I don't think they can just "bump up the bandwith". The idea is that they are already tapped.

i get HD OTA and I always see compression artifacts when watching football on CBS in HD. Granted it's whenever the camera is panning.

But the company plans to launch two satellites next year that will give it the capacity for 150 national and 1,500 local HD channels.

From what I've been reading the bandwidth can be bumped.

Compression can be a bargaining chip in carriage deals. According to Doug Jones, chief architect of cable products at video-equipment maker BigBand Networks, networks sometimes obtain a more favorable carriage fee if they agree to have their HD programming carried at 10 or 11 Mbps. ?That's all tied into the programmer negotiations,? he said.

I'm watching MNF on ESPN right now. Charter is awful for HD. It's all artifacted and about once a minute the feed glitches. I wish I was at my apartment so I could see the game on Comcast. I can't imagine it's this bad.

OTA broadcasts can be compressed too. Anytime there is multicasting (multiple streams being broadcasted at once), the stations need to compress the original HD stream.

Thank goodness for Comcast, I flipped back and forth between the Bears game and LOTR trilogy on TNTHD yesterday 🙂

Yeah, that pissed me off because I had missed The Fellowship of the Ring in HD when it was previously shown. I had my HD DirecTivo set to record it not thinking about them shutting it off for NFL Sunday Ticket. Oh well, at least they still showed The Two Towers and Return of the King.

Mine looks great. Yay Time Warner 🙂

TW here and ESPNHD is by far the worst looking HD on the air. Best looking are the inHD channels.

The beginning of the game looked kinda crappy but it looked pretty good after the 1st quarter. (Time Warner-Austin)

Football (and most sports) looks better in 720P on my TV. 1080i looks better for just about everything else though
