ESPN gets to keep Monday Night Football through 2021

Oh well, network/broadcast TV is just a phantom of what it used to be anyhow.

ESPN and the NFL announced an eight-year rights extension on Thursday that will keep Monday Night Football on ESPN through 2021 and will increase the number of NFL-related shows on the network significantly.

The agreement, which begins in 2014 at the end of the current deal, also includes more broadband rights for ESPN.com and ESPN mobile platforms, increased international rights and the option to carry a wild-card playoff game on ESPN if the NFL decides to.

as a person who does not have cable, i dont like that line about the wild card games on espn. i should not have to have cable just to watch the nfl playoffs. i would be uber pissed if they did not broadcast those on regular channels.

the only way i am ok with it, if it they do more with streaming stuff which i do see mentioned so maybe there is still hope.

i don't think i am alone when i say that if companies would get off their rear ends and offered a reasonably priced streaming package i would pay to be able to stream every nfl game.

meh i don't mind it at all. i like jaws, gruden, and terrico. i just wish NFL network didn't get any games cause the shitty cable i have doesn't get that station.

I don't have access to cable. I wish I could pay for a subscription to stream ESPN.

From what I recall, there is an option to get NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go without needing DirecTV now. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: Okay, it's still through DirecTV... but no dish package needed.

See, the problem is 90% of the NFL games I want are broadcast on local channels, so it really isn't an issue. My big thing is almost all the college games I want to watch are on ESPN.

If there were a package where I could get all of ESPN I would do that. Or at least all of NFL+NCAAF

you can get a lot of NCAA football games streamed on Xbox 360 with XBL.

thank you for pointing that out, i did not know that was available. just a few months ago i checked and they said you needed regular Sunday ticket first before you could have the to go part. i like this option, because i am one of those who cant get it for line of sight issues, however i don't think that 350 is an amount that i want to pay for it. i am thinking more like 20 bucks a month of something like that for the length of the season would be reasonable. still, its something i may look into.

This. I actually like the ESPN crew quite a bit. Gruden was kind of rough at first but I think he has really become a pretty good commentator.

don't bet on it.

NFL licensing is only going to get more and more expensive, whereas the networks can simply produce yet another douchebag reality show for peanuts and use it to fill the void.

such is the progression of free TV.

I like Gruden, always have, but his volume is just way too amped, all the time. Even his normal talking voice is up to eleven.

Goodell mentioned the possibility of expanding the playoffs in the future. My guess is that the NFL pushes to add 1 team to each divisional wildcard, makes a "play-in" game for each division, and puts that play-in game on ESPN.

Hopefully the "expanded digital rights" part of the deal results in MNF being added to ESPN3, but I won't hold my breath. MNF is really the only thing I miss with not having cable any more.

Gruden is ok. I think my entire problem with him is every time I watch/hear him talk, all I can think about is why the heck he's announcing at 40 something years old. Get your ass on the sidelines and coach. You can announce when you're older than dirt. Same goes with Cowher.

I know it's their lives and all blah blah, and that this is a way easier job. I just think coaching is either in your blood or it's not, and it's hard for me to respect those guys for what it seems to me taking the easy way out.

Kind of like Bradshaw imho.

they are all very loud, for sure. But those guys tend to be yelling on top of each other when they talk--it's all they know to do.

The thing with Gruden, is that his normal voice and speaking manner tends to be unusually loud.

the big thing with Bradshaw is that he is also an idiot--which has its own merit.

I don't think they are taking the easy way out--iirc, Gruden was strongly considered and interviewed for whatever high-profile position last year (I already forget, haha), but declined. With guys like him, it tends to be finding the right organization for his style. I think he wants more control than most will offer him.

But I would definitely like to see him coaching again. Cowher, too.
