Hopefully we can keep the flaming to a minimum?

ESPN compared the stats of both teams and the quality of their competition. Kind of interesting really. The one thing that stood out for me was that the Dolphins only had to beat two teams with a winning record.

Category.........................'72 Dolphins...........'07 Patriots
Opponents' record...............70-108-4.................94-89
Record vs. winning teams.........2-0.......................6-0

I'm not trying to minimize what the Dolphins did nor am I any kind of NE fanboi... But given this kind of context, what the Pats did this year was pretty impressive. They beat four division champs and six total playoff teams. Not bad.

It is pretty sad for NFL football really that the superbowl was decided on the 8th week of the season.

The Pats are just stacked, there is no question. Barring some catastrophe they are going all the way this year.

(i hate the Pats)

The only way I would like to see the Pats lose is if it's to Favre and the Packers. And I'm not a fan of either team.

I watched the Patriots play the Colts and the Giants. The Giants especially gave it an unbelievable effort and even got a spot of luck on the kick return, and it still wasn't enough. The Patriots seem to be able to score at will. Brady to Moss is magic. When a very good defense puts forth the effort of a lifetime and still gives up 38 points, you know you're watching something special.

Set those recorders, folks...you might want to watch these upcoming playoff games again someday.

Of note, 1/3 of the losses of the Opponent's record against the Pats is from the pathetic Dolphins.

And it would have been against 7 playoff teams if the Colts had actually played a game against the Titans.

Any thoughts on whether or not the "old timers" on the pats D will last until Feb? Seems like the Pats have given up more and more points as the season went on.

I think they'll be fine. Having home field advantage is a plus. Outside of the Eagles game, they haven't given up more than 14 points in a game at home, including the last 3 home games in December.

72 Dolphins have SB rings. The comparison is not valid unless NE wins it this year.

lmao its hilarious to see how bad the patriots used to suck when they have 4 or 5 hugely winning seasons and finally just barely broke the 50/50 lifetime. Man they used to be the crappiest team in football for like a generation.

heh, it wasn't quite a generation but yeah, we had some rough years. still, as a kid in the 70's, we were happy to be brought to a game (my Dad got 8 season tix when they opened schaeffer) because the games were almost always blacked out. we sat through some rough years but they weren't all bad. i remember rushing the field when they made the playoffs in 1976 (iirc) and we had some great players to watch, like the hannah/gray combo on the left side of the o-line.

and we had the original hasselbeck, or hasselclip as we called him due to his special team play.

but yeah, 1-15 and 2-14 seasons can hurt, lol.

To this day, I'm still in awe that the Fins basically gave the Pats Wes Welker for essentially nothing. Good riddance Randy Mueller and Cam Cameron.

Well, a 2nd and 7th isn't a bad trade

I agree that the regular season only matters so much, because the intensity is stepped up in the playoffs, and it's a different game. If you're talking one single season, I'd call them tied right now in terms of the impressiveness of their records. The Pats had a much harder schedule in a tougher era that includes Peyton Manning on the other side of the field, but the Dolphins won in the playoffs and lost their starting QB for much of the year. About even to me, though it probably won't stay that way. The Patriots are going to either move ahead or fall behind.

But it's also true that, if we're talking about the greatness of a team, we need to remember how dominant the Patriots have been for several years. The Dolphins didn't do that. As an overall thing, the Patriots are clearly the greatest team in history. Nobody else has dominated as much as them for as long as them...at least, not since the merger. I don't know much about football in the olden days.

Football has changed alot since 1972.

Salary Cap
Size and athleticism of players

Going undefeated now is MUCH MUCH MORE of an accomplishment than going undefeated in 1972. But the Pats aren't done yet, they still gotta win the Super Bowl to go undefeated.
